Anyone else heard this guy? My son recommended him via this link – from NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts.
Ultra funky four piece band, brilliant playing, GOOD SONGS, especially “Heart Don’t Stand A Chance” which starts at 3.44
He started playing drums in the church (familiar story) – and here’s something he said about his background from Wikipedia – “My little sister and I went out front, and my pops was on top of my mom. There was blood in the street. He was arrested, and that was the last time I saw him. I think he did 14 years.”
He’s fantastic. And a really good showman as well as being a talented musician.
I’d never heard of him but a friend dragged me along to see him at Roskilde. My gob was smacked.
@Kaisfatdad your gob will be wonderfully smacked once His Nibs recommends music to you, as my son does to me. FB will be a relic of the past by then I suspect, but it’s such a great heartwarming exchange when it happens
That’s a lovely thought, @Mousey, and I am sure that in the future he will be sharing stuff with me that I like. He does occasionally suggest I watch a track on YTube but it’s always Grime. Too many young men venting their aggression in the company of girls in their underwear.
But then there’s stuff like Stormzy who is a whole different league.
That’s a really good session – and a good show usually, I watched on Youtube and went on a bit of a trawl though the others on the page, I can recommend the Tank and the Bangas session
Yeah it’s a really good show. I checked out Anderson .Paak’s albums and I prefer the stripped down Tiny Desk versions of the songs to the (to my ears) over-produced album tracks
Have a listen to his Breezy Lovejoy and Nxworries albums too. He’s also all over Dr. Dre’s Compton movie soundtrack. Talented chap and I like him a lot.
That Tiny Desk session is very tasty indeed.
I loved Jason Isbell in Brighton this Sunday but, hand on heart, I preferred his Tiny Desk concert – there are some absolute gems throughout however many seasons TD has been going
It seems like the Tiny Desk Concerts have become some kind of standard – ie if you can do a TDC then you’re a real live performing artist..
The best one I’ve seen is the Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings Christmas one from a couple of years back.
I keep trying to get some attention for Lake Street Dive without much success, but I think they, and this, are terrific.
As is Anderson etc. Talk about stage presence!
Another good place to visit is KEXP. I stumbled upon their sessions when looking for a clip and found hundreds of 20-25 minute sessions immaculately recorded as well as individual songs:
His Glastonbury performance was the best thing I saw on the BBC all weekend

Well confused; I was expecting it to be the Jon Anderson and someone collective Rob C used to promote from time to time.
