Enjoyed Mary J v much. I was going to say, posting half way through watching, that the only thing that would have topped it is if Eminem had taken the knee 🙂
On the one hand, a tremendous set featuring banger after banger. On the other, a strange feeling, realising that this demographic is now in range for legacy performances of this type.
Actually, more of a Coke/Pepsi conflict of interests. And as she was quite recently voted Artist Of The Decade and is a multi Grammy winner, you don’t think they wouldn’t have her on a heartbeat, seriously?
I was looking at Dre’s slight paunch and silver stubble and had the same thought about legacy acts. Even Em is nearly 50.
(Snoop’s having aged into cuddly comedy rap grandpa has got to be the transformation people in 1993 would’ve predicted least, right?)
I enjoyed the whole show immensely. Next Episode, California Love, Family Affair, Still D.R.E., Lose Yourself, Forgot about Dre (ish), M.A.A.D. – all absolutely ace. But very much left me feeling that hip hop is to modern music much as Chuck Berry was to most of David Hepworth’s faves: great, deathless, but very much the property of people of a certain age now. Whatever hip hop is now, it’s mutated a long way from The Chronic.
Eminem is suspiciously wedded to that cap; god knows what’s going on beneath.
I have to admit that I was never really a West Coast kid. I really like some of these records, and I was huge fan of Tupac’s flow, but Snoop and Dre were never really my guys.
They did put on a great show though. Not quite at the Prince level, but definitely one of the better ones.
I wonder if that persona (Uncle Huggy Bear) is the same over there? I guess it must be: an ad campaign the size of Just Eat’s is probably only worth it if it gets shown worldwide.
Edit: of course it is. I forgot the Starsky & Hutch movie.
“Put your hands in the air, do it like you just don’t care”. Really? I rather enjoy rap-style reportage, sardonic wit and clever word play when I hear it. But this seems lowest common denominator stuff. I suppose it’s a Superbowl intermission show, and is never going to be Scroobius Pip.
..er.. how did Cincinnati feel about all this L.A. wank?
Imagine if the cup final was between Liverpool and Hull and the entire half time show was the reunited Housemartins, the Red Guitars and Kingmaker with Lucy Beaumont on the decks..
The show was fab, wasn’t it, but our friends from across the water never get anything right. They should have given us a couple of hours of Snoop, Kendrick, Eminem and the gang, with 15 minutes of that stupid rugby with helmets thing in the middle.
It’s gone 😀
Superb Owl half time show, pechance?
Try this one

That’s the one.

Mary J the highlight, and fuck Dr Dre.
Yeah the youngsters would be a bit confused by these aging performers 😉
Surprising they don’t go down the Adele, Eilish, Swift route, but there must be a reason for that.
I heard they were planning on booking Taylor Swift, but then word got out that she uses the same chord structures too much, so they cancelled.

I was being sarcastic.
Ah. I did wonder, but bit anyway. 😏
You never know on here! I should have included the “/s”.
I wouldn’t have known what that was, not being down wit da yoof and all … 😏

Nothing will ever be quite at the Prince Superbowl level 🙂
I watched it again recently. Utterly ridiculous.

“Who’s Scroobius Pip? He’s only the rapper that Snoop Dogg could have been”.
I can’t abide those West Coast jokers. Bring back Miker G and Sven.

An X-Factor style sing-off between Frankie Vaughan and David Whitfield would do it.

Never do anything right? They’re planning to do an American version of Eurovision – can’t wait to see what a shemozzle they make of that one.
