To London friends, cronies and associates and indeed people I don’t know… let me recommend this, a ‘Martin Carthy at the BBC’ box set launch event that is something akin to an audience with Martin Carthy at Cecil Sharp House on Monday 24 August.
It will, strictly speaking, be an audience *within which will be* Martin Carthy… and onstage will be a selection of personalities talking about, celebrating and performing the songs of Martin Carthy… including fearless keeper of the flame Eliza Carthy (fiddle/voice) and the fabulous Jon Wilks (guitar/voice). 🙂
Leading the discussion will be um, er, ah radio sensation Mark Radcliffe no less.
I’ll be there too – in the audience – in my capacity as box set curator. A rare trip to London. Come and say hello if you wish.
It’ll be legendary!

I’m at Folk East in 10 days, and have just seen the redoubtable Miss C is a late addition, reprising the recent final tour of her Dad without her Dad, with a Thursday night show for w/e ticket holders, featuring Jon Wilks, Angeline Morrison and her son, Martin’s grandson. Well chuffed.

Can’t be there myself, though I’d love to be. Immersed in the boxed set at the moment, thoroughly enjoying it*, and would like the opportunity to express a profound thanks to the man himself, and to shake your hand, Colin, for such sterling work keeping the folk flag flying.
*and I am also still deep in the R/evolution set, scribbling notes for an appreciation that will find its way to these pages. Eventually.

I went twice to the Eliza and The Daddy* concerts, I got a chance to chat and thank him as although not performing he was in the audience both times. So @vulpes-vulpes consider one of my thank yous was from you.
* as Eliza refers to him.
Thanks Hubes. We saw them at Bradford upon Avon on that tour in April this year, but I didn’t think to see if Martin was in the audience – I wish I’d looked!
I saw Scarborough and York both being relatively ‘local’ as Eliza didn’t want Martin to tour.

Just had a lovely chat with Jon Wilks, at Folk East, where he and Eliza C curated another round of their Songs of Martin C. Sadly Martin’s condition accelerates apace, but moments of great lucidity flash in amongst the debris. Can’t sing and play at the same time anymore. I know what they say about cancer, but I think dementia is worse.
(The Daddy wasn’t there, tucked up at home near Whitby.)
