Documentary on Sky Arts right now. Fascinating viewing, I’m sure it will be on catch-up etc. Well worth a view. Seeing Elton going in to Tower in LA with his list of wants, ticking them off as he bought multiple copies for all his homes.

Fond memories of Tower records, in both New York and San Francisco. The staff inspecting my purchases and talking to you about the music – I miss that – and I always felt a sense of relief, thinking I had passed some kind of cool test, when I left with my goodies. The branch in Piccadilly Circus has borne witness to many drunken purchases (the only possible reason for finding a copy of Be Here now in my raincoat pocket the next morning).

I watched it with a small sense of nostalgia. I made a pilgrimage to the store on Sunset in LA as I’d heard so many stories, and left almost financially broken. I’d also go to the one at Piccadilly Circus as it was one of the best stocked stores I’d ever come across (if one of the most expensive).
The LA store is still empty – it was sporting Gibson Guitar logos when I wandered by back in July but otherwise looked forlorn. I think the parking lot was used for the Sunset Strip Music Festivals than ran for a few years until 2014.

There was one for a while in Brum, bottom of Corporation Street. Good selection of country, folk, soul, blues etc. Now it’s back down to HMV and a couple of 2nd hand outlets that have moved to places nobody can ever find. I despair.

TR Tokyo is still hanging on in its last gasps. Not long to go though.
Tokyo usually projects the future, but in this case I think they’re behind the times a bit.
