I’m on a Beethoven kick this week – so I’ll be listening to his Beethoven concertos tomorrow…
I had the pleasure of seeing him perform a Schubert sonata (I can’t recall which one) in the late 80s.
I also saw him on Hampstead Heath once. As we walked past I said “Good morning, Dr Brendel”.
He didn’t respond.
I’ve watched that video many times. Such a gorgeous piece and played with such delicacy. RIP – truly one of the greats.

Yes his Beethoven sonata recordings are the benchmark. Actually I think he recorded them all 3 times FFS.
Yes my first encounter was his old Vox recordings from the 5e0s/early 60s released in UK on the Turnabout label.
Well, maybe…I prefer Wilhelm Kempff’s first cycle myself.
