It wonβt last. I managed a decent amount of birdies and pars last month. And I lost my streak during the on golfing days. But I am due a run of 5βs.
After the first hole those missing in (in)action are Hawkfall, Big Stevie and of course the Baron. They (and anyone else) are welcome to join us any time, as long as they have the results. I’d have to run this past the stewards, but in theory there’s nothing to stop you crashing in at the 18th with 18 eagles. Wouldn’t go down too well though.
Iβve changed my approach to first and second words. Thought today was going to be bad after a blank start but it took me a while to work out the only word I could think of after the three letters in the right place on the second.
I’ve been using a Wordle ripoff to experiment with making my start word the correct word in the previous round. Makes absolutely no difference e to anything as far as I can see.
Just out of interest, @Leedsboy (and well done so far, cap doffed etc) does your new system involve ignoring correct letters on your first line for the second?
As an aside, and I realise our player numbers are dwindling, it’s pretty obvious that competition is making us all more professional, hardly any disasters (now looking forward to my failure tomorrow).
I have friends who take Wordle too, too seriously – like those saddos who know all the accepted Scrabble words – but surely it’s the taking part that counts (says the man who’s not very good at Wordle)?
Rarely to be fair. I have a second word that has no letters from the first (which got used today) but if there are some I will use variations on that. I canβt bring myself to use a word I know is wrong.
I use Hard Mode which can mean staring blankly at the screen for a while trying to find something – anything – that would fit but also means that every guess is a possible correct answer.
We’ve had this debate before but apparently there is evidence that using “Hard” makes finding the solution easier. Not my experience but I’m probably the Wrong person to quote
So here’s the leader board after 9, with the new entrant crashing straight in at no.1. As ever, feel free to quibble if my adding-up or subtracting has gone wrong.

This, frankly, is getting ridiculous! It’s like you’ve all discovered the algorithm for Wordle Success. I’m a reasonably intelligent old codger and I’m sure if I really put my mind to it I could exponentially increase my gaming expertise but what started off as a covid diversion seems to have morphed into a somewhat soulless search for bragging rights and where’s the fun in that? I’m going to use XYLEM as my starter tomorrow, a birdie is on the cards…
That’s my 5th birdie, which by an outstanding coincidence is the same number you’ve had. Do you think people revealing how many under par they are is bragging? If it helps, I’m sure people could be persuaded to stop. My trusty spreadsheet will reveal all in due course.
Bragging was indeed the Wrong word. My feeling, however, remains we’ve all got a bit too professional and as a result it’s not so much fun these days.
I personally find a battling par more enjoyable than a cleverly deduced birdie but it helps I’m not very clever …
See, that’s what I mean! Chiz has assaulted an innocent spectator just and only because he scored a measly par. Where are the fives, sixes and disasters of yesteryear? It was all so innocent back then, just a disparate group of hapless amateurs happy to be out in the open air, only occasionally getting lost and never, ever having arguments. Well, hardly any arguments – there was that time when *********************************************** (redacted redacted redacted).
It’s a professional tournament, Lodes. We’ve got ringers, betting cartels, dispute negotiators, the whole works. Do you have any idea what that four will cost me in sponsorship and central contract fees? Millions, that’s what.
By the way – was anyone else here way into their 50s before they realised that the golf equipment brand Titleist is not actually pronounced Tit-leist?
I used to play golf a bit as a teenager and Tit-leist was the standard pronunciation among the young lads at the course I played on to the north of Bolton.
Listened to the Archers the other day – all the kids have grown up, having sex and taking drugs. It’s like it’s 2023!
ps nevermind Sid & Jolene in the shower, Nigel & Shula having it off was the seminal moment of the 20th Century. “Going up Lakey Hill” indeed….
A flamboyant, crowd-pleasing birdie to end my round. Well, it would be crowd-pleasing if anyone was actually watching me – all eyes seemed to directed elsewhere. In an attempt to whip up some social media interest I employed an attractive young βinfluencerβ as my caddie this time. Nice enough, but she spent a lot of time pouting, rather than helping me with my putting! She uses a platform called βOnly Fansβ. I think itβs marvellous that with-it tech-savvy golf fans have an app like this devoted to golf.
What is Only Fans? Is it somewhere where like-minded folk can go to discuss the relative merits of various Grateful Dead bootlegs, for example, at the level of granular detail which would exclude people who are not fans?
Goddam double bogie on the last, would you believe it. That’s a wrap on seven under, quite respectable but a long way short of the Baron / Leeds standard
I’d like to thank all my supporters who have stuck with me through all the bad times (and boy have there been some bad times). The secret of tomorrow’s success? Simples, a new starter -GLYPH.
Victory is mine!
So here we are. There are no winners or losers of course, just playing the game (Baden Powell told me that), but RayX comes from nowhere to carry off the trophy.

@Lodestone-of-Wrongness what do you mean by β RayX scores a 52! Oh Chizβ¦..β?
I truly hope you arenβt trying to draw me into your childish games. Others hope the same from the private messages I have received concerning you
Ah, childish games, the very thought. No more misguided attempts at humour from me, I’m obviously not very good at it. Your 52 score is astoundingly good, I send you my warmest admiration. (I still wish to see a photograph of you and Chiz standing next to each other, mind.)

For algorithm read start word that has an a, an e and three very common consonantsβ¦
I understand CRATE is statistically one of the “best” starters. I prefer TRYST
Iβm happy to stop posting my round score. Iβve always done it even when Iβm having a crap round. Happy to stop if it is annoying.
Not annoying (to me at least). As I say above “bragging” was Wrong.

I hope she kept your wood well polished.
What is Only Fans? Is it somewhere where like-minded folk can go to discuss the relative merits of various Grateful Dead bootlegs, for example, at the level of granular detail which would exclude people who are not fans?
…or is it women with their fadges out?
I think it’s a ventilator emporium. (Which doesn’t necessarily preclude your second guess.)

I’d like to thank all my supporters who have stuck with me through all the bad times (and boy have there been some bad times). The secret of tomorrow’s success? Simples, a new starter -GLYPH.
Victory is mine!

Yet another par. In days gone by I might have been happy with a round of -7, but will be languishing at the back of tfe pack I fear.

Have we finished?
Helluva round from Leeds, well done there.
I ended it on my more than typical par. I suspect I am the wordle equivalent of Clive Allen and normal service will be resumed next year.

A bland par on an empty course to finish level and, I think, secure the coveted wooden spoon.
Just woken up – full results soon!
So here we are. There are no winners or losers of course, just playing the game (Baden Powell told me that), but RayX comes from nowhere to carry off the trophy.
RayX -20
Leedsboy -16
SteveT -12
Steve Walsh -9
Jim -8
Chiz -7
mikethep -7
Paul Hewston -7
Lodestone of Wrongness -5

I was a bit Spurs to RayXβs Leicester. Well played sir!
I will be worse next time and sack my manager halfway through.
RayX scores a 52! Oh Chiz…..
My 67 once again secures third from bottom. A bloody 67! Third from bottom. Life, eh?
If only Baron was here to see this mysterious usurper claim his crown
I have a name @chiz
@Lodestone-of-Wrongness what do you mean by β RayX scores a 52! Oh Chizβ¦..β?
I truly hope you arenβt trying to draw me into your childish games. Others hope the same from the private messages I have received concerning you
Ah, childish games, the very thought. No more misguided attempts at humour from me, I’m obviously not very good at it. Your 52 score is astoundingly good, I send you my warmest admiration. (I still wish to see a photograph of you and Chiz standing next to each other, mind.)
Merry Christmas, Wordlers: my “Yet Another” thread probably has a few weeks life left in it so see you there…..
I see Wrongness is shit stirring again.
Further up he cried about bragging then wriggled out of it.
You really are pathetic Wrongness and it is apparent to everyone.
Merry Christmas!!
Thanks Mike. Nice course…
Well done Ray.
Until January.
Just a thought: howsabout in January we try using this?

That randomiser was my secret weapon
Thank you @Leedsboy, you put in a superb performance as did everyone else. I doubt Iβll be able to achieve the same result ever again
Best wishes for the forthcoming festivities to everyone, as a great human once said βItβs a funny old gameβ
I tried it on my Wordle rip-off app, which wouldn’t accept half the words it came up with – one of which was choon… π
Thank you @mikethep – the greens were a delight to play on. Congratulations to @rayx.
Thanks @mikethep. And congrats to Rayx and Leedsboy. That was fun. I’d love to do it again. Does the next tournament start on New Year’s Day?
You’re all very welcome. The next one will start with a run of hungover bogeys, presumably.
Not an image that will easily go away
Horrible Derek and Clive flashbacks!
This was my intention when I came here previously but I was rudely diverted
Thank you for organising The Afterword Masters V tournament @mikethep
