Right I have been tasked with doing an alternative/goth disco next Saturday. The lovely lady organizing it would love me to just play The Cure for 3 hours but that’s certainly not happening. As I was a white socked soul boy for most of the 80’s and 90’s I need some pointers. The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, New Order all sorted but would like some advise with the Industrial and Goth side of things. I want to keep the punters dancing so nothing too depressing. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Might be something here that would fit the bill on the Gothic side:
For the alternative 80s/90s side, you can’t go far wrong with Pop Will Eat Itself

floorfillers par excellence coming right up….
Front 242 – Headhunter
Floor fillers from my experience:
Great starter to the evening:

Kept them up there fro a bit longer:
Foetus – Wash It All Off
The Cramps – Good Taste
you did ask for goth…
Fields Of The Nephilim – Preacher Man
3 hours?
9 reps of Cluster’s 21.14 should do it.
Next question?
not strictly goth or industrial, but close enough for government work
Fugazi – Waiting Room
(I am dredging all these up from my iTunes Club Zoo Classics playlist, named after and full of the stuff they used to play at Plymouth’s premier early 90s alternative club)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVTtFjU0T-Y
Siouxsie & The Banshees – Spellbound
Nine Inch Nails – Head Like A Hole
Killing Joke – Change
1000 Homo DJs – Supernaut
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KofSmnRaFk
Jane’s Addiction – Ocean Size
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7y9yChV478
Violent Femmes – Add It Up (skip the first thirty seconds for dance floor purposes)
PiL – This Is Not A Love Song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4Qbkl3MUdQ
right, this is getting freaky (see my comments in the vengeance thread….)
It was a straight choice between that one and “No Rest”
Think I will now go and listen to “No Rest For The Wicked” at stupid volume levels

Ministry – New World Order
Spooky KD, all your stuff could’ve been the soundtrack to the clubs of Leicester/Birmingham/Coventry that I was frequenting at the same time. To the extent that “Headhunter” was the first thing I thought of too!
How about this then? Though could also have gone for “Join In The Chant” or “Fun To Be Had”).
(“Control, I’m Here” – Nitzer Ebb)
…and let’s not forget the B-side of Headhunter!
was this the greatest 12″ single ever?
and thumbs up for Nitzer Ebb too!
Arguably my two favourite songs ever
(“In Shreds” – The Chameleons)
(“Kerosene” – Big Black)
I love Kerosene, and Atomiser has maybe my favourite LP cover of all time
A bit of a Psych-Out section
(“Revolution” – Spacemen 3)
(“Arc-Lite” – Loop, though “Head On” or “Collision” would work too)
Some industrial covers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6zqYSezqwo
Cabaret Voltaire – Nag Nag Nag
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-IixtxKETU
Bauhaus – Lagartija Nick
Sisters Of Mercy- Temple Of Love … OBVIOUSLY!!!!
Alien Sex Fiend – I Walk The Line
Oooh…Dead and Buried for me
Banshees “Happy House” sampling House track.
I think you could get away with this…,.
Well a great night was had by all. This was the surprise hit of the night!
Can’t wrong with this
go wrong,of course
Tones on Tail – Go!
Cant believe we’ve got this far without any Sisters of Mercy
or this….
Psychedelic Furs – Love My Way
Comsat Angels – Independence Day
Spear of Destiny – Liberator
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwpkiU-RaMo
From the more “industrial” section
Nitzer Ebb – Warsaw Ghetto
Foetus – Anxiety Attack
Skinny Puppy – Assimilate
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYC5VFuiblU
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult – Kooler Than Jesus
Bauhaus – Kick In The Eye
Very danceable.
Not strictly Goth but suitable Doc Marten stoppers to get cardigans flailing
Bahaus – Bela Lugosi’s Dead
Pop Will Eat Itself – Bulletproof (Adrian Sherwood mix)
Leftfield/Lydon – Open Up
Dinosaur Jr – Freakscene
Janes Addiction -Been Caught Stealing
Violent Femmes – Add it Up
1000 Homo DJs (aka Ministry) – Supernaut
Meat Beat Manifesto – Radio Babylon
Nitzer Ebb – Fun to be Had
Bella Legosi’s Dead is always popular with stunningly beautiful vampires and their victims, should they be on the guest list.
Wow! Thanks all.
Will have a good listen tonight when we get back to Cape Town.
Patchy internet out here in the sticks.
For the Grebo Gurus
Jesus Jones – Never Enough
Gaye Bikers On Acid – Everything’s Groovy
Crazyhead – What Gives You The Idea You’re So Amazing Baby?
The Wonder Stuff – Unbearable
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UC5QSuvxHAY
Wot no Carter USM?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l6vTw97QWs
And not forgetting….
https://youtu.be/p1lbjNVbGe4
https://youtu.be/xOw8xo_KuGs
Can’t post a video but I must add Ned’s Atomic Dustbin’s ‘Happy’, I’ve shaken my locks to that one many times. It’s not Goth but Grebo, though.
I used to run a goth night and this always went down well
If she likes The Cure…
Fuzzbox were vaguely “Goth-y” before the makeover so any excuse to dig out this little pearler of summer fun
And a bit of Rammstein from the industrial end of the spectrum
https://youtu.be/KzGKsXPBILw
The Lucy Show… alternative as opposed to goth
another industrial(ish) from the cider soaked dance floors of Plymouth
As with Cop Shoot Cop (haven’t heard that in ages!) on the Grunge/Industrial cusp.
Sort of.
OK, I like it and think everybody else should too 🙂
(“Jack Pepsi” – Tad)
For a while in 1991(?) that was my mate Steve and mine’s going out song. Prior to getting the bus into town we would sit in my room drinking glasses of…you can guess what we were drinking
Another traditional one for getting revved up (see what I did there?) before going out.
Petrol-drinking generally discouraged, ding a ding danging your dang a long ling long allowed only in private…
(“Jesus Built My Hotrod” – Ministry)
