So I’m doing a reggae themed party in a couple of weeks and looking for some inspiration.
I have loads of the usual commercial stuff like Marley UB40 etc.
Also the Trojan Roots & Ska box sets & the Two Tone one, but looking for some more recent uptempo 80’s & 90’s tracks for the mainly over 40’s crowd.
Will be playing for about 4 hours.
All ideas welcome. The more leftfield the better!

Eeek! Isn’t anything by Jonathan King as bad as playing some Gary Glitter?
What’s the feeling about Judge Dread these days?
If you have Spotify, here are a few playlists based on suggestions from AWers.
Ladies of Reggae
Reggae ( amazingly varied selection)
Reggae bands from all over the world – From Brazil to Iceland! Some marvellous stuff too.
That should give you some inspiration. Good luck!
No Spotify in South Africa. 🙁
That’s a real pain Number Six. But it seems that some people manage to use it down there by using a proxy adress. I just googled “Spotify in South Africa?” and found some interesting info.
But I’m sure you’ll manage fine without it.
My vote goes for Uptown Top Ranking.

Yup that’s already on the playlist. I’ll have a try again with Spotify on the weekend. With out slow internet down here it was painful over a proxy.

As you were.
80s & 90s so I guess we’re talking dancehall. Did dancehall kill reggae? Thats a question for another thread, but there was some great dancehall, most of which has already been suggested. I don’t think this one has yet: Shinehead – Rough and Rugged
And a few left field choices starting with some reggaeton from Sergeant Garcia
Rebel Tumbao who’s album was a kickstart project with a version of Marley’s Them Belly Full
and some Rasta Funk from the Hot 8 Brass Band

Some nineties roots from Garnet Silk, just before he died – Splashing, Dashing
Eighties Reggae? Got to have The Clash and the full-length Armagideon Time
http://youtu.be/U2fJc0rsflQ
The Clash! That’ll have the same effect as when Jagger announces ‘Keef’s going to do a couple of numbers’.
Sorry Tiggs, but I must again refer you to my observations on discos, in particular the inadvisability of playing anything remotely rockular in a terpsichorean context.
White men with guitars = CS gas on the dancefloor.
What’s wrong with you two??!!
Paul Simonon’s bass is thunderous on this track and the dub breakdown (the vast majority of it) is as heavy as Lee Perry.
Have you actually listened to it in the last thirty years?
Have you ever danced in public?
Luciano – One Way Ticket
Plus, Freddie McGregor – Shake It Up Tonight, Frankie Paul – Should I and Sanchez – Praise Him.
Some Prince Fatty is always welcome
His version of Cypress Hill’s “Insane In The Membrane” is a good party record – unless your crowd is already tired of it
Disc Two of These Are Some Serious Times
1. Notorious – Turbulence
2. Living in Love – I Wayne
3. Marijuana – Richie Spice
4. Rolling – Tony Curtis
5. Rolling – Jah Mason
