Paging @junior-wells – coming up in sunny (?) September in Sydney is a gig at the Camelot Lounge with Moussa Diakité, a guitarist who “was part of the golden era of Malian music in the 1970s and ‘80s, performing with some of Africa’s best, including Salif Keita, Oumou Sangare, Toumani Diabaté and the Super Rail Band de Bama”.

How does that sound as a night out ? A sweaty little warehouse seating something like 160 people in lovely Sydenham. Don’t believe them claiming it’s in the cultural mecca of Marrickville, the upstarts. It’s next to Sydenham station and the whole area reminds me of Brentford circa 1982. And not in a good way.
Anyway, as a gig for a complete Afro-music numpty who has only got the vaguest awareness or Tinariwen – worth a punt ? And I had to look up how to spell Tinariwen. My inclination was Tiwarinen. This is also where I find out it’s not afro-blues in the first place….Anywho, it’s Sept 28th for anyone in the neighbourhood, Malian independence day.
He lives here in Oz now, so maybe touring too.

Thanks Harry. Yes I know Moussa. A nice guitarist. I think he was part of Youssou Ndour’s band when he toured the first time and then quite a few of them jumped ship and tried to stay in Australia, some successfully obvs.
Took quite a few years before Youssou came again.
Moussa played at the Womad before last and often gets up and plays with touring bands from his region.
