I’ve just read that there is to be a release of Mad Professor’s dub remix of Massive Attack’s Mezzanine. Protection/No Protection is one of my favourite things to listen to, so I’m slightly salivating at the prospect of more musical pairings to enjoy/sink into.
It reminds me how much I like such remix albums and their sources, whether it’s Echo Dek & Vanishing Point, Laika Come Home & Gorillaz first album or Too Young To Die & Casino Classics (Primal Scream, Gorillaz, St Etienne respectively).
I’m always keen to hear more of such joyful and creative album/remix album pairings. Any suggestions?

I ordered this in October 2018 as part of a 2CD set with a remaster of Mezzanine on CD1. The release date has been put back umpteen times, heaven knows why. Is it really being released this Friday?
Jamie xx remixed Gil Scott-Heron’s We’re New Here rather beautifully.

Paul Morley described The League Unlimited Orchestra’s Love And Dancing as an exclamation mark for Dare! A Martin Rushent remix album.
Open Your Heart
Kraftwerk’s very own The Mix is magnificent.
The track that is improved beyond measure is Radioactivity.
The Mix is a misleading title as this isn’t technically a Remix album, these are complete re-recordings of old tracks created when Kraftwerk were upgrading their studio. It’s basically their Live set of the time, performed without an audience. The recent 3D The Catalogue does the same thing with all the albums ( including The Mix!) except they are live recordings with improvised parts and an audience although there is no crowd noise captured .
Soft Cell Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing’s Memorabilia.
At the time, there were rumours of Donald Fagen writing with the band. If they did, they’ve never been released.
Wow! You go, @Tiggerlion! I’m looking forward to hearing all of those, particularly the Gil Scott Heron and Kraftwerk remixes.
I’ve given them all a listen, Tig, and like the Soft Cell remix the most, which I’m not surprised at, as The Grid are one of my favourites, who really have a Midas touch.
Lovely.
I also like the remix of Janet Jackson’s album, Control.
When I Think Of You (Dance Remix)
An unlikely candidate for this kind of thing, Bill Callahan released a dub album of his “Dream River” LP. “Have Fun With God” indeed!
And here’s the dub:
Of course, AW faves Khruangbin have just done this, this years Hasta El Cielo being a dub of Con Todo El Mundo. Sounds much of a muchness, to be fair. Even has Scientist doing the last 2 tracks.
Steve Mason had one of his albums dubbed by Dennis Bovell a few years back.
If you extend the remit to “remix” rather than strictly dub, there does seem to be a lot of this thing going on at the moment, with Jane Weaver and Teleman, for example, issuing reworkings of their most recent albums (not wild about either of the new ones meself, mind).
Funny enough, both turned up on EMusic, which, these days is mostly only worth looking at for its decent catalogue of actual dub..
(Oh, and if it’s not too obvious you should have Grace Jones’ Hurricane/Hurricane Dub on your playlist).
If you’re as keen as I am on David Sylvian’s Blemish and Manafon (of course you’re not) the remix albums The Good Son Vs The Only Daughter and Died In The Wool are essential.
‘Dub Side Of The Moon’ and ‘Radiodread’ are reggae versions of the Pink Floyd LP and of ‘OK Computer’ respectively, by Easy Star All-Stars. And jolly good they are too.
Björk is fond of a remix album. My favourite is Vulnicura Strings an acoustic version of the parent album.
