For embarrassing reasons I don’t wish to discuss, I am hosting a guest who is quite the spoonophile. When he’s not talking about spoons, he’s on about other forms of cutlery and utensils. It’s going to be a long month!
So here’s a playlist of spoon and cutlery related music to keep him occupied. Surprisingly eclectic, don’t ya think?
Do you have any suggestions over what to add? Yes, yes, you SAY you have better things to do but I don’t believe you.
Remember seeing Split Enz a couple of times while at Hull Uni and remember one of the highlights to their sets at that time being a rather energetic spoon soio
A song with an energetic spoon solo would nestle perfectly into the playlist. Kiwis too.
It isn’t a solo, but it does have a cardboard box/spoon-based rhythm section.

I have such fond memories of seeing Split Enz live in 1977 they were so bloody weird at the time and when they came to St Albans Civic Hall I bought one of the first tickets. This programme came as a folder with several inserts and 2 badges as well as a poster all in a bag for about £1.50 I still have the tiny “I’ve Got Dizrythmia” badge.

There’s Jam & Spoon, of course. Status Quo and Mojave 3 have spoon-related albums. Etta James sang a song about them, as did Can.
The regular Private Eye feature:
But could there be anything more spoon than an album with this cover?
Love the ‘Stir It Up’ inclusion – that made me smile.
That one came to me quite late but in many ways it’s the best one.
Sadly, very Quo’s love of spoons extended way beyond their album titles
The Dark Side of The Spoon

Don’t be ridiculous.
Spoon, the greatest band on the planet?
I haven’t listened to it yet but we’re talking Britpop-era aren’t we?
Nope, US college rock for the 21st century. Amazing band.
👍
I was gonna post this, satrically, as I remembered it being a bad example of a really shite unit-shifting, chart-clogging atrocity back in the early 2000s, but it’s actually a breezy (mainly 2 chord) samply, breakbeat pop tune with tasteful harmonies. Memory can be a fickle mistress.
DJ Spoony is someone I have heard of and I can’t remember why.
Was on wonderful radio one in the early 00s
She’s once, twice, three times a Ladle.
That song which goes “and he played upon a ladle, a ladle, a ladle” will feature when I update the list tomorrow. I bet there’s a version by Jethro Tull.
Squeeze – Ladled with love
Ladle Marmalade
Light Years From Love by Martha Ladl(e)y
Chic – Soup(spoon) for One.
Oh boy.
Given all these bad utensil themed puns I’m surprised no one’s told you to fork off.
Anyway, how about Aztec Camera Knife.
Has anyone mentioned “Spoon” by Can yet?
No?
OK – here’s “Spoon” by the Mighty Can!
I mentioned them once, but I think I got away with it.
Spoon is also the name of their record label.
Always need some cheesy Europop in your life – how about this from T-Spoon?
You could also have that Boards of Canada track “Beware the Friendly Stranger” off of Salad Fingers. He likes rusty spoons…
Oh and this banger of course. How did I forget this?
Other cutlery is available:
Knife
And Fork
Electric Spoons
Wot, no Spoonman?
Did i miss a posting of Willie Dixon’s Spoonful? Or a million other versions including Cream.
Gil Evans Orchestra.
Immediately thought of the Skynyrd.
Virtuoso spoon playing from The Spoon Lady?
Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham – I’m Your Puppet
Oscar Jerome – The Spoon (Live)
and not forgetting Billy Butlin on spoons..
Sppppoonnnnsss!!!
I’ll be in my basement room with a needle and a spoon.
Here’s a great version.
At their place, you can’t eat your egg, ‘cos all the spoons are black
“You’ve lost the Runcible Spoon”
Just love the stabs of mellotron on here. Well, I love most stabs of mellotron.
Crash Test Dummies – Afternoons and Coffee Spoons
(One for the literary list too – referencing TS Eliot’s The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock )
Ahem – already there.
Something from Scoop by Pete Townshend, or anything by Big Dipper.
Wayne County – Fork Off
NWA – Fork Tha Police
Oasis – Forkin’ In The Bushes
Yeah, yeah, spoon, knife, fork. Whatever. For millions in this world the only cutlery they need is…(Warning! Contains Liberace)
Mack The Knife … many versions to choose from, so I pick one of the first I heard (may not be the best, but you never forget your first …)
This is actually pretty tasty. Robben Ford on geetar
Is there a band called The Spatulas, I wondered…
Ivor Cutlery.
He’s on the playlist for that reason alone.
A few suggestions from my WMP (but titles and band names only, I can’t remember lyrics if my life depends on it…):
Spoon – Cibo Matto
Spoonful – Howlin’ Wolf
Greasy Spoon – Billie and Lillie
Too Much Pork for Just One Fork – Rick Miller
Knifey – Amyl and the Sniffers
Dirty Knife – Neko Case
Jack the Knife – Freakwater (that’s Jack, not Mack)
I Am Looking for the Truth, Not a Knife in the Back – Micah P. Hinson
Gamma Knife – King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
Smiler with Knife – Morrissey
also: anything by The Knife (perhaps A Tooth for an Eye would be suitable?)
and something by Shonen Knife (I only know Twist Barbie however)
Here’s the King Gizzard tune – warning: skip to 0:13 if you’re prone to seizures!
Updated.
Apart from anything with cuss words and that awful sex on the beach song. Spoonie singing that in front of the kids is the last thing I need.
Hmm – seems to be the same as before. Maybe it’ll update later.
Just in case anyone at all is wondering, Tinie Tempah is there because I think a prong on a fork is called a tine. I think.
How about Doris Day’s By The Light of the Silvery Moon:
I want to spoon
To my honey, I’ll croon love’s tune
Though these days you’re supposed to have a wooden Honey Dipper rather than a metal spoon but it doesn’t rhyme or scan.
It’s in the playlist but the version by Ann Breen.
There are three Dylan songs with spoon in the lyrics here’s one.
Well, that mockingbird’s gonna sail away
We’re gonna forget it
That big, fat moon is gonna shine like a spoon
But we’re gonna let it
You won’t regret it
What a superbly entertaining thread and playlist, black Celebration
i can’t believe we’ve got this far without mentioning the splendidly whimsical Button Moon kids show starring MrSpoon and his family.
or indeed T S Eliot’s J Arthur Prufrock…
For I have known them all already, known them all:
Have known the evenings, mornings, afternoons,
I have measured out my life with coffee spoons;
I know the voices dying with a dying fall
Beneath the music from a farther room.
So how should I presume?

“Interestingly”…the Spotify suggestions for the playlist do not feature songs that reference cutlery or other kitchen utensils. The so-called-all-seeing-and-all-knowing-algorithm hasn’t picked up on the connection. The stupid bastard.
More electric spoons.
