Listening to Sun Ra when I heard the news.
Somewhat fitting.
The Monkees, in Head and especially 33 1/3 Revolutions per Monkee, were every bit as bonkers as Sun Ra, arguably more bonkers.
Peter Tork gave us a superb and innovative TV series which is still genuinely funny, a host of fantastic 45s, at least 3 wonderful L.P.s – Headquarters, Pisces… and Head – and a cast-iron classic and utterly unique film, Head … not forgetting an awful lot of goodwill.
The first album I ever bought was the Monkees and suspect that listening to a whole load of 60s stuff growing up in the 70s was the reason why I’ve always liked psychedelia.
Saw Head in a club once, can’t remember much about, which is probably quite fitting.
Just been out walking the hound-dog, listening to the pop quiz ( poop quiz ..) All The Way From Memphis and one of the clips played in respect of a question was Randy Scouse Git, which was a nice reminder of a) how good that song was b) how much enjoyment I got from the much repeated Monkees show during the school holidays in the 70’s c) how much Monkee music is really rather good.
Then get in, sit down in front of the PC, click up the Afterword blog and find PT has died. Bugger.
Now, which thread to post this on? Another reason why we should have a standing section for obituaries. Haven’t we discussed this before.
Anyhoo. I was wondering how they sounded on those reunion tours. Here is some dodgey phone footage from their final show in 2016. Dolenz can still cut it.
I have posted this before but it showed that they were still producing great music fairly recently. I love this track not written by them but it sounds just fine –

Everyone dies twice on The Afterword
Thrice even. I added Tork to the 2019 Obituaries thread as well.

Hello, MrsMoseleyMoles. Good to see you on the blog. I see where your daughter gets her good sense from.
Please post often.
All that. And it’s only a couple of years since he helped bring the summer…

What a blast! The guys gave a really good account of themselves; a lot of love in the room that night.
They were rather good, weren’t they.
I’m a bereaver
Very good and he would have probably liked that -as he explains The Monkee in this clip.

An absolutely ace piece here.
