I live in Germany. If you so much as chuck a piece of satsuma peel into the wrong bin, you are marched into the back yard by the building’s tenants and interrogated for hours until you break down in tears and swear never to eat a piece of fruit again.
You should move up the Rhine to Bonn. We’re much less observant of such strictures. 3 or 4 times a year, we can make like Hyacinth Bucket’s brother and throw any old tat direct onto the street outside our house. Sperrmüll (not the disposing of tissues from teenage boys’ bedrooms), sees the disposing of any and every item, large or small, that doesn’t go in the green, yellow, blue or black bins, and isn’t electrical, onto a big pile by the side of the road. Amazingly it all gets fitted into a standard refuse lorry.
Same in Oz, @salwarpe – though only once a year. The event is invariably marked by optimists cruising the streets in utes and vans ahead of pickup time looking for anything that can be sold. No doubt a lot of it can’t be sold and ends up back on the street again.
Our green (garden waste) bin went out completely rammed full on Thursday night. I was in the shower when the bin men came on Friday morning. I looked out of the window and it hadn’t moved. “Oh crikey, why haven’t they emptied it this week? Too full? Spotted a tea-bag?” The lorry was at the other end of the road but I could get there if I sprint.
Pulse racing, I remembered to put on some clothes before rushing out of the front door. I lifted the lid and… it was empty. They had simply placed it back *exactly* where I had left it the night before.
I could do without that kind of white-knuckle drama before breakfast, I can tell you.
“Corduroy Plants is an hour-long, unannounced concert film directed by Daryl Hannah and released for free on the Neil Young Archives. It documents Young’s 2025 “Love Earth” tour with The Chrome Hearts. The title is a mondegreen (misheard lyric) from the opening track, “Daddy Went Walking”. “
I’m currently in UK where 90 year-old mother-in-law flung herself head first backwards from the top of the stairs to the very bottom. Miraculously, apart from three broken ribs, a controllable bleed on the brain and vertigo/giddiness she’s more than ok.
As an aside, after spending long hours in Worthing Hospital I can’t help but notice the absurd number of, say it delicately, somewhat overweight people. Is the Sussex Riviera the new Florida?
Thanks for that – we really feared the worst but she is the epitome of a tough old bird. I expect right now the nursing staff, wonderful people all, are drawing straws as to who is going to do the next series of tests….
I had a heart scan in Worthing a week ago and the nurse practitioner commented that they get quite a lot of people weighing 150kg through the department. It made me feel quite svelte. No idea if there are more morbidly obese people here than other places but a lot of them ride mobility scooters. I’ve always assumed it’s because it’s quite flat here. We also have a lot of severely disabled adults who are taken out on the sea front by carers.
The IBD clinic and the Obesity clinic are held at the same time in my local hospital. Sometimes I think the waiting room is going to turn into a see-saw with all the Crohn’s patients left up in the air.
I’m nearly six feet tall and struggle to keep my weight up at 75kg. I struggle to think how 150kg is possible.
There was a huge woman in the department reception when I went in who could easily have been 150kg. She was being pushed in a wheelchair and made no move to get out of it. I felt a bit sorry for the porter pushing her.
I hang out at another site which is nearly all middle aged or older Americans and during a recent discussion, it was revealed that a significant number of them were on weight loss injections. Not only that but they expect to be on them for life. There have always been overweight people but there seem to be more now and a lot bigger too. What has happened in the last 40 years or so to make such a change?
Not just the hospital I’m afraid – the queue outside, the admittedly fabulous, Chipwick was indeed a sight to behold. “Two large cod and a hundredweight of chips, please”.
A short walk from Worthing Hospital (on a break from hospital bed duties) I stumbled across the Selden Arms. Proper old-fashioned pub, 19 cask ales on tap. And is that, it can’t be, it is – the Allman Brothers on the sound system. Now selling the house in France…..
Hope you get your hamper, Lodey. One of my friends lives in Worthing so I’ll mention that pub to him for a potential future pint. I’ve been to the Goose a few times, which is on the front- would recommend.
I went to a little record fair this afternoon. On the sound system was 18 With A Bullet. What did I spot at the front of the pound bin? Breakfast Special by Pete Wingfield. Reader, I bought it.
In Lichfield we each have a black, a blue, a purple and a brown. Now they have decided we need
a separate food waste bin. They can fuck right off – I don’t have room for the four I already have.
Food waste will continue to go in black bags in the black bins.
Question – how much plastic has been used for every wheelie bin in the country?
I know saving the planet is important but these bins attract rodents and maggots to name but
two unwanted visitors.
That hamper looks a long way off…..
Here’s my contribution to the hamper, Mr L O’Wrongness- save me a pot of Gentleman’s Relish when you get it
It’s yours – maybe we could chat for, say, another 96 comments?
May I join in?
What shall we chat about?
Is it bin day and which one?
It was black bin and general recycling day last Thursday. The next black bin day seems oceans of time away.
Ah we were away and so couldn’t put ours out and missed the garden waste bin (which was full) too.

don’t mention the peel.

What’s black bin? Is it landfill? Ours is black with a red lid.
They’re purple in Liverpool.
I’ve bought a couple of new watches. Anyone interested in watches? No? Ok then.
I did see this rather nice house with a sundial in Lyme Regis though rather awkward to carry on one’s wrist.

Yep. Although my left wrist is suitably manly I definitely couldn’t carry a house around on it.
@henpetsgi here’s a telescope to help that hamper look nearer.
Meanwhile, back at Neil. Is this from his ‘old songs played live because the new ones are rubbish’ period?
I’m unexpectedly 9 over on hamper eligibility, so you can have a few of mine to bump up the total.

Hope your MiL has a speedy and full recovery. x

Ultra processed food.
Less manual jobs
Sorry about your MIL, LoW.
Fat people at an A&E is rather a self-selecting data set wouldn’t you say?

We’ve been here 25 years and I’ve never been in The Seldon Arms. The Hare and Hounds in Portland Road used to be nice.
The Selden Arms https://share.google/TxsXUVwkSc1fgiCKk
Maybe I’ll call in after my next appointment.
I think you should – absolutely nothing to do with my hamper quest, honest guv, it’s a perfectly formed pub
You had me at The Allman Brothers.

You ,sir, are a Force!
I happened upon it a few weeks ago on You Tube. An enjoyable watch I thought….

The big selling point from our council was that the big lidded bins are rodent-proof.
I wonder how Neil Young feels about wheelie bins?
When You Dance I Can Wheelie Love?
And into the top corner it goes!
