Schadenfreude is sometimes an unattractive quality, but when one is revelling in the misfortune of the DUP it is so far up on the moral high ground that one can’t even see those ghastly people gnashing their teeth below. 🙂
Three years ago – on the back of a huge scandal about committing £500million of public money to a flawed heating scheme (which was either monstrous corruption or monstrous stupidity) – the DUP decided to deprive Northern Ireland of a functioning Assembly and go off on a fully-paid sulk with even more public money.
Punk legend Petesy Burns and myself made our views known in video/single release ‘Smash the System’ roughly a year ago. The karmic wheel has now turned and the price the DUP has to pay for playing the po-faced God in Ulster has arrived in the form of a a Westminster amendment bailiff last night at midnight: alignment with the rest of the UK on equal rights (abortion and homosexual marriage) and the 21st Century.
Legislation for this to happen was attached, by Westminster backbenchers, to one of the Brexit-related Acts of Parliament a while back. The DUP’s arrogant games-playing with regional democracy has come back to haunt them. These are the kind up people who would tie swings up on Sunday.
There is a delightful irony in the DUP currently whinging about wanting alignment with the rest of the UK re: Brexit – with no customs border down the Irish Sea – while being aghast at suddenly finding NI, as of today, becoming aligned with the rest of the UK on matters of health and social policy.
We’ve yet to smash the system – in the form of NI politicians still being self-important gits, pocketing loads of cash and not doing their job – but, happily, Westminster has at least kicked a hole in it for us. It’s changed the system – for lots of normal members of society who couldn’t care less about constitutional claptrap. Anything that displeases and outmanoeuvres the DUP can only be of benefit to normal society. Smash the system.
