Blimey. That’s a whole book in one post.

Ha! I kept editing but didn’t want to ruin the story.

I saw the “infamous” Kinks/Yardbirds tour in ’65 but saw no visible signs of damage to Dave (or the hi-hat). Must have been pre-Cardiff. I first saw the Kinks a year earlier when they were the unknown opening act on the Dave Clark 5/Hollies package tour. They finished their short set with “the next single” You Really Got Me. It made an impact.
Kink Kontroversy was the first album I ever bought (along with Vanilla Fudge).
Great article.

Thanks. Wow, great memories. I remembered the Yardbirds tour story from years back, so went in search of more detail. It sounds like a scene from Spinal Tap.

Think it was the same incident, but the enhanced story is Dave had taken to playing on stage with his tackle out. The flying hi-hat very nearly severed his manhood

Marvellous as ever.
That’s a whole chapter of the book, isn’t it?

I took so much out, too. The Searchers are one of my ‘soapbox’ bands, in that they get no credit, simply because they weren’t big in America.
McGuinn has effectively said, “no Searchers, no Byrds,” and they are a template for so many modern Americana bands – jangling guitars, multiple harmonies.
Their version of Fogerty’s Almost Saturday Night sounds like it could have come out yesterday. Will Birch did a great job as Producer.
Another British band who’ve never had a sniff of the R&R HoF but should be a shoo in.

Another great piece Niall. I’ll post the link elsewhere tonight. You have a small number of fans in the Washington DC area who eagerly await the next one.

Wow, thanks. Get them to follow me on Twitter and I’ll tag them in for each new episode.
