The BBC is presently showing selections from The Best of Terry Wogan”s thrice weekly early evening chat shows (Wait! Come Back!)
They are available on the iPlayer Machine and well worth viewing. If you don’t like someone just fast forward till you find someone you are interested in……..so far I have watched Rock Hudson chatting just a year before he died, James Stewart in tears reading a poem about his much missed dog and Audrey Hepburn recounting Roman Holiday and My Fair Lady.
Even if you don’t like Wogan they are worth viewing Generally the excerpts are from the 80’s and in many ways from a different era.
Maybe it’s an age thing but I wish chat shows were still like that instead of the horrible self promoting adverts for the (so called) stars they have now become.

I liked it when he went on holiday and Kenneth Williams did it. He was great.
Didn’t Ben Elton have a stint too?
I recently caught the ‘car crash interviews’ compilation, with the likes of George Best and David Icke. Uncomfortable viewing.
Talking of uncomfortable, I remember an interview with Kelsey Grammar, I think on Wogan, where he spoke about his experience of domestic abuse by his wife. The audience found it funny and started giggling.
I watched the Glamour one today and in the link after Grace Jones’ appearance, Wogan wistfully remarks;
“Her main claim to fame was slapping dear old Russell Harty. She needed a good slap more than him.”
Keep ’em in their place, eh, Tel?
Yes a very testy interview with Jeffrey Archer and a stunning rendition of When The Day Comes Down by The Eurythmics. No
really, its on youtube
I wish chat shows were more like that as well….. although I don’t think I ever watched one all the way through because it had an alarmingly high quotient of Wogan in it and the fact that he (and the other skin crawlingly obsequious) Michael Parkinson are no longer on our screens is certainly a good thing.
My favourite was Russell Harty but have there really ever been any really good chat shows where the star’s the star and the interviewer is just doing his job?
Face To Face?
The Dick Cavett Show?
Anything with Mavis Nicholson?
