Wouldn’t have put much money on my favourite film not being from the 50s or 60s five years ago but… ‘Summer of Soul’… still acutely embarrassed I only saw it five times at the cinema. Please forgive me Sly.
Only George Clinton left of the Holy Trinity of Funk now. I posted recently on here that Sly and the Family Stone’s best of is truly one of the best. So many wonderful uplifting gems and his chequered career after his peak still has some reminders that the talent
was still there under all that
“snow”. RIP
Ah – I didn’t see that we had a Gerry Rafferty situation going, so I’ll just copy my response from the second thread and leave it here too:
Brilliant artist who could make the most joyful music ever, and the most gut-wrenching angstful music too, both equally great.
And one of very few men who could make a crocheted multi-coloured frilly hat look kinda sexy!
A true legend.

RIP Sly
Surprised at how surprised I am to read of
his passsing..
A giant talent who diminished his brilliance
with every snort of coke
An actual genius.
Forget the flaws & remember him for stuff like this

That is a fabulous film. I liked the anecdote from the fan who said that he and his friends were suit and tie gigs… until they saw Sly!
He was a true great. It’s such a shame that his addictions killed his talent.

…is Gerry OK? Did something happen?
Sly was a colourful character, who may or may not have had a fling with Doris Day. RIP
I did check before I posted my obit but this one appears to have more traction.
Here’s a tribute from one you might not expect. Leo Sayer on Facebook. 3 screen shots in all.
That’s a wonderful eulogy.
He should be posting here…
He should be dancing
Why, has he joined the Bee Gees?
😉
No, he’s a one man band.
@Black-Type
Occurred to me a few seconds after the correction
window slammed shut .
This is almost as bad as Popegate a few weeks back
What a lovely tribute, expressed with the genuine awe of a true fan.
There’s a rather good documentary on Disney+ called Sly Lives!, directed by Questlove.
This was an erudite and fascinating explanation / demonstration of Sly’s skills as an arranger including something I had never heard of – hocketing.
