I’m glad it’s not just me, I’ve been looking at it all day.

Ha!
If he puts on a pair of wings he’ll look like a fly!
Aww, c’mon, if you’d lost that much weight, you’d want to show the world…..
It’s taken against John Sebastian’s original tie-dye shirt, which Elt recently paid $350,000 for. The photograph was taken by Pépé, Sir John’s wasp-waisted intern, just before the poppers hit.
Evidence for this outrageous claim? $350K for a t-shirt?
Er … Mousey … I made it all up. I’m not even sure if has an intern called Pépé, wasp-waisted or not. But I am sure Sir John wouldn’t know a “popper” if one popped up his nose!
From Alan Aldridge to this – how the mighty have fallen….
Tragic. Sir John had a long run of truly beautiful album artwork. You’d think, what with him being a “patron of the arts”, he’d still care. But not, apparently.
When you say ” a long run of truly beautiful album artwork” are you sure you don’t mean “a couple of decent LP sleeves”?
I didn’t say “unbroken” run.
“Elton John” – moody, genre-setting.
Tumbleweed – evocative stage-set photography (in the UK).
Madman – great typography, attention to detail
Goodbye/Captain – state of the art English illustration. This is important, goddammit, because it was the last wave of an old, old tradition.
Since then, nada. I wonder what happened? The eighties, perhaps?
Yeah, OK, I’ll concede all that.
Elton is one of those artists who have been operating on good will alone since 1975
Bit of an exaggeration there I feel. Obviously the pre-’75 era is superior but there are more than a few gems to be found more recently, notably the Songs from the West Coast album, including the brilliant I Want Love and this:
This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore
Well, we mustn’t forget Patrick Proktor’s “Guardian Readers” on the front cover of “Blue Moves”
That may be a good painting (I have no idea), but it’s a fairly uninteresting album cover.
scary beast…… top left hand corner ?
Not as scary as the one front and centre …
It’s way better than this cover:

Didn’t someone mention smiling on record sleeves recently?
Yes. Me. The thread died through a lack of good examples (or a lack of interest). This cover is marvellous. Cheered me up in a grey, drizzle.
Yes, I noticed you ignored the pair of dazzling smiles I contributed. Not good enough, eh? No, I’m not upset at all….
😉
Thanks Mini, that was pwopah funeee. So good, in fact, I’m gonna get the Vice app- is all the writing as perky as that?
I’ve no idea andielou, I stumbled across it on fb, I think.
Oh – I was so mesmerized by the image that I didn’t even see the link last night!
Very funny indeed.
It does rather overwhelm the link beneath it. And everything else in sight.
Superb.
Superb album cover.
Superb bit of writing about it.
Wonderful. Crazy. Night.
I don’t think Elton has an original thought in his head. It’s been done, old girl.
My nomination for the worst EJ album cover is “Friends”, the soudtrack of the 1971 film that Elton and Bernie did the music for. The film was shite and the album cover was HORRENDOUS (google it!) but some of the songs were actually pretty good.
Elton and Bernie were on such white-hot form in those early days that even their third-tier songs, dashed off in about five minutes, like “Friends” and “Honey Roll” were well worth hearing.
Just have Googled it – and I think it’s pretty good, like an out-take from one of the preliminary pages of The Joy of Sex. Certainly a lot better than the 3 minute Andy Warhol knock off on Leather Jackets.
Still listening to the remixes Pnau did of his stuff
How quickly we forget:

I think this is “a” Julian Schnabel, isn’t it? The new one may possibly be by a “fine artist”, too. Like that terminally shit Madonna cover recently.
The new album photo is snapped by Jürgen Teller. An image search shows the usual lightbox of A-list slebs (you know what the A-list is – tin-nosed, mirror-hogging shitheels), all lensed in a very sub-Helmut Newton way, with dull and flat lighting. Artlessness as art. Sorry – “artlessness” qua “art”. We need to know who “designed” this cover, and who “art-directed” it. Then we can chase them all down in our tanks and crisp them up with flamethrowers.
The Guradian says the album is going to be a “return to form”.
Watching PIL on Later the other night I couldn’t help but notice notice how much John Lydon now resembles Elton.
