As a follow up to the Channel 4 ‘Music of the Millenium’ post here is a new guess list to take your mind away from other stuff.
As I am clearing out my loft I have come across a 2001 publication entitled “The 100 Best Recoed Covers’ published by Q magazine.
Unlike the previous post this one does not prioritise one choice over another but lets you just guess what is on the list.
On you go…and images will add to the fun!

Patti Smith – Horses
Uncle Wheaty says
None of those.
Carl says
Strangeways Here We Come
This Charming Man
What Difference Does It Make
Uncle Wheaty says
None of those are in the list.
Slug says
Question: was this a Q readers’ list or a Q writers’ list ? Having seen the list, I’m assuming the latter.
Uncle Wheaty says
It is a writer’s list with just over 20 contributors.
Slug says
Figures. There’s a fair amount of “If I choose this, people will think I’m painfully cool” selections with some on-trend 2001 bands that have now entirely disappeared from the collective memory. Earl Brutus, anybody?
fatima Xberg says
Not really. The point of the special issue (I have it right before me) was “the story behind” those covers. And there are no lists of the writers’ votes – there isn’t even a ranking like best or worst.
Diddley Farquar says
That’ll be why they’re often well known examples and sometimes questionable and controversial, e.g. who would choose Electric Ladyland as a great cover? But there’s a story behind it.
Jackthebiscuit says
It has only just registered with me that it is record covers & not just albums.
SFF/Penny lane?
Magical mystery tour?
Slade in Flame
Johnny Cash 4 (Produced by Rick Rubin)
Uncle Wheaty says
None of those but there is a Slade record on the list.

Obligatory Richard Thompson reference (and an outlier because he often has dreadful covers) – Richard and Linda’s Pour Down Like Silver
Moose the Mooche says
Bright Lights is a great sleeve.
Gatz says
It’s decent, but not an all time classic. Generally his covers tend from mediocre to poor. And let’s not forget he had possibly the worst cover of all time withy the official bootleg, Live at Crawley (the breath-takingly ugly baby is his youngest, Jack)
Black Celebration says
My brother has a running joke where if someone shows him a photo of their baby – he’ll recoil in horror – but then collect himself and say all the right things.
Lemonhope says
Breathtaking
Jackthebiscuit says
Ian Dury – do it yourself?
Vulpes Vulpes says
I reckon so too.

Rigid Digit says
Top Of The Pops
Uncle Wheaty says
Spot on.
Pick any dodgy mild misogynistic cover that comes to mind, preferably with a blonde women without a bra stroking a guitar.

In these benighted times it is both amusing and interesting revisiting the highs, the former, now embarrassing highs, the lows, the re-evaluated lows that are now highs through these list explorations.

Fair point. I’ll post another list based thread then in the future.
