I am reading the biography – I wasn’t going to buy the compilation associated with it (thought I’d have all the toons already)….then realised that there was a second disc of collaborations, many of which I hadn’t heard, never mind own….
My chancing upon Jimi’s ‘Peel Sessions’ EP in a charity shop yesterday has delayed my appreciation of a Billy Fury b-sides compilation (true) that arrived this morning.
The 80s African space disco of Ata Kak, home recorded with cheap instruments and equipment, self-released on 50 cassettes and lost until a slightly speeded up version was found, remastered from cassette tape and released on CD…the best kind of barmy music with a singer that occasionally will remind you of a speeded up Vic Reeves club singer…and then the background chorus gets the party started for real, and he starts to rap!
Is it good? In a wonderful DIY way; yes. If you like odd sounds.
It’ll put a smile on your face and make you do silly moves:
I have this album too and was disappointed on first listen but it has grown on me. The vocals are quite strange and his voice is like a weird ancient instrument dug out of an antique shop. Beguiling and bonkers.
Just been watching Series 2 ep.6 of “Uncle” on the iPlayer. Now I’m listening to “Operator” from “Blues Unlimited: The Best Of Alexis Korner”. A slow piano-based blues featuring a certain Mr. R. Plant on vocals.
I’ve only just got around to buying Curtis Live! It shares the same sense of intimacy and supreme confidence at being able to hold an audience in the palm of your hand. I saw Curtis play live in a small venue in Manchester shortly before his accident. He was masterful. Mick Hucknall was in the audience.
Thanks Ganglesprocket – not familiar too much with BOC previously. Loving it . Discovering much through Spotify.
It’s a beautiful morning and post my Sunday charge up Primrose Hill, sitting on the terrace and listening to an ambient mix by Jon Sa Trinxa from Salinas beach sessions.
First track of the new Todd Rundgren album: come back to me in 45 minutes for a considered view – though suspect I will not listen to this first track again.
‘The Other Side of Billy Fury’, a trawl through all his 50s/60s b-sides – perfect! – on See For Miles.
The sleeve notes inform me that there was also a ‘Billy Fury E.P. Collection’ (doesn’t come as a complete surprise) and so, as I’m Sohoing it on Tuesday, game most definitely on.
