I know there are a few hi-fi experts on here, so the benefit of your expertise would be appreciated.
My CD player is less than 3 years old (Marantz CD6006 UK edition) and has suddenly started behaving erratically. It plays a few seconds of a track then randomly starts the track again, or another one, then ejects and reloads for no reason. It no longer responds to commands either from the remote or from buttons on the machine. I have cleaned the lens to no avail, but I suspect it’s more than just a laser issue. My last Marantz CD player lasted over 20 years, so I would welcome any advice before hurling this one out of the window.

Can’t help with a solution Boneshaker but as I just bought a new Marantz cd player last week I’m pleased to note it should last until I turn up my toes.
Rigid Digit says
Don’t say that – my Marantz CD-40 is coming up for it’s 20th birthday. Never had a problem with it and said to myself “When this gives up, I’ll probably get another Marantz”.
Maybe I should start scanning the Richer Sounds website
No help to your issue though.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
What about cleaning the CD with Mr Sheen?
(actually, that might be an idea. Unless it’s being random on all discs of course)

I’ve experienced a bit of erraticism (real word?) from my little Denon of late. Lens cleaning more than once (with one of those special discs) and the odd puff of air into the drawer seem to have done the trick. I suspect a bit off fluff, or maybe a cat hair.
Moose the Mooche says
I always suspect a bit of fluff.

Hello sweetie.
Moose the Mooche says
Well, hello. Are you in need of something shiny to go in your slot?
retropath2 says
At least you admit to having a regular polish of your assets.
Moose the Mooche says
I could have commented on the somewhat Freudian “erraticism” but I am too much of a gentleman*
(*about three stone too much)
minibreakfast says
As long as it isn’t a minidisc.

Well, 5″ is considered reasonable. Can fit into a Japanese businessman’s pocket.

Do you have a compressed air spray? If not, why not? If you do have one, try making sure everything inside is as dust free as you can make it. It may be not just the lens but the mechanics.
Moose the Mooche says
If you have any left in the can you can point it in your mate’s ear and inflate his head for a laugh.
Smiles Diles says
You need a blow off!

JQW says
The chip or circuit that controls the front panel is most likely knackered in some way, hence the erratic behaviour.

It sounds very much like the laser is having trouble tracking the spiral groove. A wet lens cleaner is much better than a dry one, try something like this:
Failing that, take it to bits and very gently clean the lens with a cotton bud soaked in tape head cleaner (Isopropyl Alcohol). Always unplug from the mains first, the laser beam is invisible and can burn your eyes.
It is unlikely to be the laser sledge mechanism in a 3-year-old player. Sometimes in older players this needs to be re-greased.
Slug says
“laser sledge”?
Me neither, but now I want one for Christmas.

They’re like Disraeli Gears, but balder.
Freddy Steady says
I’m an older player and I DEFINITELY need re-greasing.
attackdog says
As fsteve suggests, you need a wet one rather than a dry one.
Diddley Farquar says
Isn’t this comment meant for the fart thread?
Boneshaker says
Thanks for your suggestions folks – I shall try some cleaning and puffing.
minibreakfast says
How did it go, @Boneshaker ? Any luck?
Boneshaker says
Well yes, @minibreakfast, and then again, no. I switched the CD player on again a couple of days later, and hey presto, no problem. It has behaved itself perfectly ever since, although I did take the back off and puffed and tinkered with it to look like I knew what I was doing. Must have just been a bit of doodah in the thingammybob.
minibreakfast says
Sounds familiar.
