I’ve wondered about this for ages. Although I did think it was because a famous name in the thread title would attract Googlers which don’t otherwise know the site, the fact there are 5 threads in the most commented over last 30 days chart with higher viewing figures that don’t appear at all in the other chart seems to suggest there’s a different selection formula behind each chart.
(screaming over his shoulder as he is led away in cuffs by burly moderators) And I woulda got away with it too, if it wasn’t for you pesky meddling kids.
Thanks for fixing it! Though now the evil weevil bug seems to have moved on to the Recently Updated chart and frozen that. Still, it’s an excuse for a song
As I write this, the top of the ‘Recently Updated’ list at the moment is this thread which implies it is working.
However, I noticed during my investigations last night that the software that produces the various lists doesn’t update the list every visit but only does it every 15 mins so you may have been looking at it during the 15 minute period when it was not being updated… if you see what I mean…
If you’re still sure it’s borked then let me know and I’ll take another look.
Blame Fraser Lewry – it was his idea and Paul B who built the original Afterword site, and myself who rebuilt most of what you see here replicated it. I never looked at the ‘most commented’ widgets myself, I never saw this as a competitive sport and about getting into ‘most commented’ or ‘most viewed’ – they were meant as a quick fix for a casual viewer wanting to see what was gaining some traction. The design of this site predates Twitter and ‘Trending’ it’s that old. I kind of like that the site works like that actually – hope the current admins keep that going – but crikey please don’t measure your worth by it.
I don’t think many of us do Doc. Just a bit of sport. One of my best album reviews got 4 comments. It’s funny what takes off apart from the obvious Classic Rock artists. And, of course, Brexit.
What you say is exactly right, Dr, but, don’t you find that world seems to be in better balance when the numbers in columns look correct? Something inside me goes ahhhhh like sinking into a luxurious bubble bath.
I don’t think of the charts as competitive sport, but as useful indicators of the mood of the Massive, the larger story arc. Afterword culture is built up from all the many comments and threads and in-jokes and back references. Without being able to see or hear other contributors, the charts are one of many ways of gauging where the party is, what you need to read to get up to speed. Also it helps me decide whether a thought developing into a topic is worth posting on here, rather than on FB, or just keeping to myself.

Sorry Slug, you’ve had your fifteen weeks of fame.

Thanks everyone for the extra info on the last updated post list.
I have now persuaded the recalcitrant code to behave so it should hopefully be working OK now
