Sad to hear that ‘Sweet Pea’ Atkinson, vocalist with Was (Not Was) has passed. such a great soul voice that worked so well alongside Harry Bowens and brought Don and David’s songs to life.

I saw Was not Was twice live with Sweet Pea and Harry Bowens in the line up- two of the best gigs I have ever seen.

That’s a sad loss.
A fantastic vocalist, in the Wilson Pickett mould.

A very sad loss. Was (Not Was) remain one of my favourite bands of all time and Sweetpea contributed enormously to that.
They did not tour much so I consider myself very lucky to have seen them once at Gino in Stockholm. A magnificent venue that has been a furniture showroom for the past 25 years.
Stumbled across this interview with Don Was and Sweetpea from a few years back when he released his second solo album.

First I have heard of dying from Bad Company. Is this s new disease?
Perhaps not in the best possible taste, I will get my coat.

Here’s a piece about Sweet Pea’s solo album from 2017.

Here’s a track written by Keb Mo who produced much of the album
Sweet Pea in 2017 with the Don Was Detroit All Star Revue.

There are probably not so many Was (not Was) songs covered by other artists.
But Wham (!) did a cover of this fine number.
A pity that the band are remembered for a novelty song when there were gems like this.
And this!

Yeah, great voice. Very strange group Was (not Was). think I have all their albums in the initial phase, big soulful numbers, plus bizarre stuff like Dad I’m in Jail and they did Out Come The Freaks on every album, at least for a while.
