F*cking hell!! I just opened the BBC website, read the great story about Banksy’s new painting and then saw a thumbnail for an article about Kraftwerk, so I clicked on that to read the story and the opening line nearly knocked me off my chair. I thought it funny, with the headline saying “how Florian Schneider and Kraftwerk…” but I just presumed they’d managed to get an interview out of him. The Man-Machine is my all time favourite album, but I’ll be just as sad listening to it in the morning as I was listening to Feline a couple of days ago. What a terrible week for music.
An hour-long Kraftwerk set from 1970 on the rather remarkable Rockpalast show. The very serious young people in the audience are as interesting as the band. It feels as though the programme haven’t really worked out how to film a band in concert. But it’s well worth a watch anyway.
Saw Kraftwerk twice. Once in 1981 or thereabouts. Second time (best concert ever) Leicester Polytechnic June 1992. Warm up gig for a more prestigious anti Sellafield show in Manchester (I think). Anyway, they came on late as they were watching Germany lose 3-1 to Holland Euro 1992. And those who know football know what a massive rivalry that is. The concert was SO brilliant. Loud. Other worldly. And those that know would realise Leicester Poly was an small venue. Capacity about 1500. What an opportunity to see them close up. A joy.

According to the Hoffmanites it has not yet been confirmed. However that is their reaction whenever anybody dies, to at first not believe it.

I have spent 29 years kicking myself for not going to see KW at Brixton Academy. I was a hard-up student and a ticket was something mad like 30 quid.

I can’t begin to calculate how many musicians he inspired. A wonderful man.

I went to Kraftwerk at RAH a couple years ago. One of the most unique gigging experiences I’ll ever have in my lifetime.

Here he is with his “other” band (feat. Klaus Schulze):
