Had this email today….at least it isn’t a wallet threatening mega box!
TRAVELIN’ THRU, 1967-1969: THE BOOTLEG SERIES VOL. 15
Available November 1
1967 saw a profound transformation in Bob Dylan’s musical evolution. Withdrawing from public view following his July 1966 motorcyle accident, he re-emerged in 1967 with John Wesley Harding, recorded in Nashville with a core trio featuring bassist Charlie McCoy and drummer Kenneth Buttrey, the resulting album had a sublime, minimal sound. Follow-up Nashville Skyline, also recorded in Nashville, featured the stirring “Girl From The North Country,” a duet with Johnny Cash. The album would reach number 1 in the U.S. and the U.K.
Now, Travelin’ Thru, 1967-1969: The Bootleg Series Vol. 15 revisits Dylan’s pivotal journey to Nashville. This 3CD or 3LP set features outtakes from both albums, including the first release of Dylan and Cash’s joint studio sessions. The package also features Dylan and Cash’s performance on The Johnny Cash Show, two Nashville outtakes from the Self Portrait sessions and tracks recorded in 1970 with Grammy Award-winning bluegrass banjo legend Earl Scruggs for a PBS television special.

Annoyingly I can’t t correct the typo….unless the admins help!
I’m really looking forward to this one….I love John Wesley Harding.
Tiggerlion says
If it’s Jimi’s favourite, I can’t argue with that!
Moose the Mooche says
To be fair, he never got the opportunity to hear Empire Burlesque.
Tiggerlion says
I wish I hadn’t.
Junior Wells says
I’ve always had a tight connection to that album. Especially Bob’s speckled grey jacket on the cover.
Paul Wad says
Funny you said that, cos I had ‘please don’t be one of those expensive 6 CD boxes’ going through my mind as I was reading the email too!

Thanks admins..!

Oh yes, this really is more like it … very likely to be my third new purchase of the year.
The Record Industry are slowly pulling it round.
I’ll have a nice day out to some moderately sized town on Friday, 1st November.
Italian Restaurant – Pizza, Wine, John Wesley Harding. Oh yes.
It’ll go some way to restoring my love of Nashville Skyline following the body-blow of finding out that Lay Lady Lay is Madonna’s favourite Dylan song.
A bitter pill to swallow.

Dylan Bootleg Series Vol. 15 … £18.99.
Pink Floyd Later Years … £429.99.
Tricky one.
eddie g says
Of course I’ll be buying it. But I do find John Wesley Harding to be the most stubbornly unlovable of Dylan’s so-called ‘great’ albums.
NigelT says
I have always found it totally absorbing! I did get it on release, and it was so strange and different – I think it still sounds unlike anything else he ever did. It was Nashville Skyline I found hard to like, and still do!
eddie g says
Ah well, there we differ. Always loved Skyline- happy, bouncy, cheerful and refreshingly tuneful.
I know I should like JWH more than I do…but I don’t. I appreciate that it’s one of his ‘greats’. I just never warmed to it.
Moose the Mooche says
Funny, I think of NS as the most accessible album in the ‘lan catalague, except of course Christmas in the Heart. It’s Dylan for people what doesn’t like Dylan.
eddie g says
It’s got ‘Lay Lady Lay’ on it. And at least three other tunes you can hum. JWH is just a bit too miserable to my ears. And Hendrix did a much better version of the best song on it…
(dives for cover…)
Moose the Mooche says
A similar case might be made for Dear Landlord – Joe Cocker’s version is great.
NigelT says
As is Gene Clark’s ‘I Pity The Poor Immigrant’ – terrific songs can always attract great cover versions!
Lay Lady Lay I have always hated! It seemed lascivious and very un Dylan like, and then there was that new voice. NS always seemed patchy and a bit thrown together, whereas JWH has a cohesiveness of sound and subject unlike any others of his (he says, sticking his neck out as far as he can!). I think Self Portrait confirmed in my mind that Dylan had lost it somewhere after JWH, and I can’t shake that long held thought.
dai says
Whether he did or not, he got it back by 74. Relatively great era until 79. Then 3 out of 4 great self written albums after 89 (leaving out Under a Blood Red Sky)
eddie g says
I wouldn’t claim that NS is one of his *great* albums but I’ve always preferred it to JWH personally. Curiously, I will bet that when Dylan eventually pops his clogs (does he still wear them) Lay Lady Lay will be one of the songs played on the mainstream media tribute items. The other one being Blowin in the Wind of course…
dai says
I love Lay Lady Lay (have the single). It went top 5, but I can’t imagine that when he dies it will feature too much. Like a Rolling Stone, Blowin’ in the Wind (as you say), All Along the Watchtower, The Times They Are a Changin’, Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door (naturally) would all be way ahead of it.
Moose the Mooche says
I have never, ever heard Dylan’s Watchtower (hurr) on the radio.
Subterranean and Hard Rain’s might get a look in, though.
Moose the Mooche says
Yes, Dylan’s voice on NS, Lay in particular, has often put me in mind of Mulligan and O’Hare…
