Well sod it, I’m posting this cos I’ve got no shame.
Also, it may or may not be on the menu when I do a little solo gig with @skirky’s lovely band Helen & The Neighbourhood Dogs tomorrow at the Kelvedon Institute – come along! 🙂
Let us know how Fern Teather gets on – and if Inspector Barnaby and his leafy middle-England associates are hovering around, trying to solve ludicrously implausible crimes.
Incidentally, as it’s a solo outing, shouldn’t you be going onstage as the Disappointment Chorister?
Having sat through the excruciating soundtrack to a work’s Christmas lunch yesterday, it made me think “What ‘A Pretty Good Christmas’ needs is a Jive Bunny megamix”. Could anything be more festive?
This is arguably the best Christmas song by anyone, ever. Both the Spice Girls and Kylie have covered it – what more evidence could you possibly need?
At this point I’ll say, as I do every year, if you meet the light-fingered bastard who robbed my white vinyl 12″ (with holly leaf label) from a party in Reading during 1989, tell him I’d still like it back. No questions asked.
Kurtis Blow, that takes me back to the days when it seemed like every rap song had Good Times or Genius Of Love as a backing track. I saw him live in the early 80s, I wish I could remember the name of his DJ. He was brilliant.
I once had an idea for a Fast Show-style sketch that started outside a Vauxhall Corsa with a triangular roof sign reading “Kurtis Blow School Of Motoring”.
Cut to interior: smooth-looking hip-hop driving instructor in a white suit and no shirt, saying to his young charge, “I’m Kurtis Blow, and I want you to know that these are the brakes.”
That is arguable because it could equally be argued that it’s not even the best christmas song on the album it came from! I’m a big Waitresses fan (I even saw them live) but I would rank it evenly with ‘It’s a Big Country’ by Davitt Sigerson and ‘Things Fall Apart’ by Christina.
You go for it, Uncle Mick! Even if the original is perfection, it would be dreadfully dull if no one else was allowed to have a crack at it. And those Katzy lasses really deliver, not to mention the magnificent string players. They have done the song proud,
Time now, not for a song but for two exquisitely played albums of jazzy versions of Scandinavian Xmas songs; Jul pa Norska and Jul på Svenska.
Georg Wadenius on guitar, Arild Andersen on bass and the ever wonderful Jan Lundgren on piano.
Neela and Locust will know many of the these songs, but, even if you don’t. I suspect you will enjoy these beautiful albums which are on Spotify.
Restrained, minimalistic, melodic: the perfect antidote to pre-Xmas stress! In my mind’s eye I see the snowy landscape outside the studio as they recorded.
You learn something every day! When the song “Children Go Where I Send Thee” appeared on Nick Lowe’s christmas album a couple of years ago, having never heard it before, I assumed it was a Lowe original. It’s so in keeping with other songs of his. Even though I now know its an old song, it still seems like one of Nick’s!
Tom’s original cover was brilliant enough – this lovely wee tribute is even better: this will be on the big screen on Christmas morning as the prezzies are unwrapped
That’s about as good as I thought it would be. Stumped over who in particular might be making a guest appearance – other than (“SPOILER” “ALERT”) the dog – who resembles Morrissey.
The Roches album is a favourite and gets played throughout December around here. I’m about to drive to Sussex to see the family and it will get a couple of spins en route.
Steer clear of her Christmas album though. I bought it for a few pence earlier this year, finally giving it a spin last week, and it’s mostly awful. It’ll be back down the chazza in the new year. 🚮
I thought I’d heard every Christmas song going (about 9 million times) and then this year, I found a new one on a Turtles compilation. But Youtube being as helpful as ever informs me that “this video is blocked”.
Oh well, here’s The Monkees version instead
I bet I have a few you have never heard. I shall be posting some in the next few days when I post my current Green Christmas CD on Mixcloud. Just be thankful this LP is not on YouTube.
How about something bang up-to-date, only released this month?
The Perfect English Weather are Simon and Wendy from The Popguns, and this whole EP is pretty wintry, with “Christmas In Suburbia” being the most overtly festive track.
Now that was a treat , Mike. A master like Ray can take an old chestnut and make it his own. Googled. The choir are the Voices of Jubilation. Now that’s what I call backing vocals.
Leon Redbone being unashamedly schlocky on his Christmas album. He isn’t really, more a throwback or musical archaeologist. He’s always been younger than you think too. First caught him on Peel around the time of his debut album, mid-70s.
That Gauthier song is of my all-time faves:regardless of the time of year! Great choice, Mike.
Perhaps because it is such an lovely antidote to the rampant consumerism and gluttony that this time of year tends to encourage. A song about friendship and enjoying the simple pleasures of life.
A thought struck me. I have my ideas on what the most popular carols are, based on childhood carol singing and church going until I became a teenage pagan. Do churchgoers have a very different list of favourites? I am sure there is a considerable amount of overlap, but maybe there are some that Top of the Pews, that we laypeople are not familiar with?
Did you know that many early carols were macaronic? No, nothing to do with the Los Del Rio Hitmakers! It means they were written in a mixture of different languages.
The list includes Tallis’s Puer natus which I posted above, as performed by Stile Antico.
I quote:
“Written not only to celebrate Mass on Christmas Day but also to honour Queen Mary’s (mistaken) belief that she was pregnant, the seven-voice texture of this carol is so sonorous and inventive that there can be no better celebration to the birth of our Lord.”
Oh well. An inaccurate pregnancy test led to a beautiful piece of music.
Glad you liked it Wayfarer. Just three women sitting around in a very ordinary Icelandic kitchen, singing together. A pleasantly Spartan antidote to the excesses of the Xmas season.
Let’s have one more from Stukurnar! I think the Icelandic title is Alone on Xmas Night I recognise the tune but can’t think of the title.
It has become my tradition to listen to little else during December than the 2014 album It’s a Wonderful Christmas Carol by The Retrospective Soundtrack Players.
TRSP are a spin-off band from Portsmouth’s they-should-have-been-huge The Dawn Chorus. The album IAWCC is a concept album/song-cycle mixing Dicken’s Christmas Carol with the film It’s A Wonderful Life. Despite being a themed album, it is a great collection of indie-leaning folk-pop songs.
