I’ve read, and reread, that book since it was first published.
There are a host of very good autobiographical books about Vietnam, none of which are especially self-aggrandizing. The one that’s generally considered to be the best – and it’s a good argument to have – is Philip Caputo’s ‘A Rumor of War’. It’s a magnificent book.
Fantastic book! Well worth 99p of anyone’s money.
See also To the Limit: An Air Cav Huey Pilot in Vietnam by Tom A. Johnson, which is similar.
And for “Nam” fiction, Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes is a riveting read.
Cheers, duly purchased
Also “The things they carried” and “Once a Warrior King”
I agree about “Chickenhawk”. I bought it on the off-chance in a charity shop a couple of weeks ago and I finished it last week. I didn’t warm to Mason at the beginning, but as the book got on, I got more and more engrossed and read more and more at each sitting.
Also, a thumbs up for “The Things They Carried”. I haven’t read it for sometime, but remember the first chapter (about the things they carried) as being hypnotic.
Thanks for the tip off speaker, book duly aquired.
I see there are a few readers of Vietnam literature here. I have a couple of friends who also delve into similar books and have tipped them off about this kindle offer. This will be the first book I`ve read on the subject, why? I do not know because I lived through this war and all it`s `side effects`, for want of better wordage.
