In a successful bid to procrastinate doing something more useful, I thought I’d check out what 999 were up to. Here they are a couple of weeks ago, apparently felling alright with the crew.
Anybody seen them in action recently? Or back in the day? I noticed there was a 4CD box set of their post-heyday albums on Cherry Red out recently…
Hi @Colin-H. Nothing to do with the need to impress? Bless you Colin, you have made an old git whose hairline is receding just as his waistline is expanding feel…..not quite as fat and bald. They were good fun in 1980…weren’t we all? Emergency was a good video – early pastel shades of new wave. post pub rock.
I saw them about 3 years ago at a festival in Brighton. I only have one single by them, 1981’s Lil’ Red Riding Hood, so I can’t claim to be an expert. I wasn’t even there to see them particularly, I was much more interested in others on the bill, but those who were seemed content enough at the end. The singer looked to be responsible for selling their merch as soon as their set was over. I guess he makes a living doing something he enjoys, so good luck to him.
I’m sure I saw them a couple of years ago in the salubrious surroundings of Butlins.
Good performance as I recall – so much better than Sham69.
They played again this March, and I think they’re playing Rebellion later next year (as does every punk band still treading the boards).
Which version of the Shamsters, Rij?
That particular event was the Tim V version.
I have since seen the Jimmy Pursey fronted “Original 1977” version – they were much better
Tim Vine was in Sham 69?

That’s brilliant @barry-blue
Deserves greater recognition.
Here’s Jimmy and the boys recently. I’ve heard people say he doesn’t go onstage with a natural chemical balance these days. Which is not unapparent.

How long are his arms! Dude’s like Inspector Gadget!
“What are [insert name of any band from the last 60 years who aren’t all dead here] doing now?”
“They’re playing. They’re always playing. Forever”
Something for parents to remember: A guitar is for life, not just for Christmas.
Who could forget ‘Emergency’?
And….er….um…
I think ‘Homicide’ is the word you see, Edster. Here’s the immortal OGWT performance…
And here’s Nick and the boys adding extra weight to it more recently…
Big baldy bloke in combat kecks at a festival : he knows my constituency.
Yebbut, his waist measurement is your height!
Thanks Colin. Don’t remember that one. But I only dipped my toe in their world. ‘Emergency’ was a cracker though.
