… I saw the greatest concert I have ever seen. Bruce Springsteen and the E St Band at Bingley Hall, Stafford. Video below is from a little earlier, but it kind of was like this.

The only time I saw Springsteen was 33 years ago tomorrow at the Milton Keynes Bowl. Fantastic of course – the encores alone were longer than some whole sets. 10 songs, 32 in total.
At the show I saw in 81 the long encore apparently ended, lights came up and we started shuffling out. Then Bruce and the boys came back on stage and launched into “Rocking all Over the World”! Think it was past midnight.

They were some team that year. Absolutely star-studded. And I say that as a lifelong Villa fan as well.

It’s great to have that as such a vivid memory that you can nominate it as the best ever. I don’t think I can nominate a concert. That said I can understand how those who have seen Bruce in his pomp right place right time have little trouble picking #1.
I was 19, that’s a good age to experience things. I have seen 30 other Bruce shows, pretty much all great, but that tour was something else, and recordings of it still stand up today
I was at Bingley Hall that night. Slightly uncomfortable as of the 4 of us who went included a couple who were no longer a couple by the time of the gig, so was a wee bit frosty. Definitely a memorable gig, as all of Bruce’s tend to be. I was 18 and it was the first time I’d seen him live.

I had a ticket to see him but I had to pass it on as I had a final for my degree the next day. 🙁
I saw Springsteen at Manchester Apollo on that tour.. It was a great, rip roaring gig, and made it worth missing Spurs win the FA Cup on the same evening (it was when they beat Manchester City 3-2 in the replay of the final).
I think it was the last time he played theatres rather than stadia in the UK To be honest, I’ve never been to see him again, largely because I lost interest in stadium gigs in my mid 20s, but rate it as one of the best I’ve ever seen.
That tour was a mixture of theatres and arenas, he has done arena tours since with the band(s), but has played smaller venues on his two solo tours ca 97 and 05

And number one this day 45 years ago? It’s a great song, and I’m not giving any clues except to say that in 10 years time, the people who bought it probably will actually qualify for next year’s old age pension.

Taking a look at the list of 1981’s number ones, I think I have them all, apart from St Winifred’s Choir, mostly picked up in recent years from charity shops.
I recently bought two copies of Japanese Boy on the same day, one for 50p and the other round the corner for 20p, and a copy of related The State of Things To Come by The Headboys for 50p.
