I’ve bought a number of cheap used cds recently and thought to share my very brief thoughts.
Richard Hawley – Richard Hawley; First timeless classic
Bruce Hornsby – The Way It Is : Pleasant “Baywatch” backing
The Strands – The Magical World Of.. : Delightful, poetic psychedelia
St Vincent – St Vincent : Excellent quirky original
any more?

The new Teenage Fanclub record arrived today, my 3 word review – It’s Teenage Fanclub.
As in “As previous album” ?
I have alternative reviews for your albums
Richard Hawley – Agree with you
Bruce Horsnby – pleasant piano tinkling
The Strands – Never heard them
St.Vincent – Not very good
By the way just picked up the Essential Bruce Hornsby last week in California – he did a lot of good stuff but a few pieces of muzak nonsense.
I was going to use the review “pleasant piano tinkling” for the Chick Corea – Past Present Futures cd recently bought for 49p in That’s Enterrtainment!
Used CDs seem to be cheaper than ever right now, particularly in charity shops and since the “vinyl revival” went mainstream. I went Oop North last weekend (i.e. Lowestoft) for a tour of the chazzas, and the prices for records were crazy – £4.50 for a Barry Manilow LP! – while CDs were between 49p and £1.99. Needless to say I came home with 10 CDs and no vinlies whatsoever.
If I see one more beard or beardette hanging from a record bag scrutinising that elusive, stone-cold classic 1983 Duran Duran or Spandau Ballet LP for £15, I swear I’ll pay my licence fee.
Who’s teaching these kids this crap?
I wouldn’t mind but they scramble over quality stuff on CD for £1 to get to it.
All the more for you and me, deram, all the more for you and me….
The Strands: Get It Now!
Two word review seen today of new of Gaga song: “Shitty Illusion”.
Got the new Monochrome Set album (“Cosmonaut”) today. My review;
Yes, Yes, Yes
(nice theremin usage)
Return to Form
Their best since …
Difficult sophomore effort.
(put these where you like!)
you talking’ bout m’set?
With a lot of the cheapie second hand shop ones I’ve bought, the review is “Hasn’t Aged Well”
Good idea, might save time fretting over nights in……
At Swim/Lisa Hannigan: Very Kate Bushy
IV/Black Mountain: Buy the single (Dunno, if it was a single, but the track released as a taster)
Example 22/Bevis Frond: Flatbed trucking relics (That’s a good review, btw)
Moon Shaped Pool/The Radiohead: Refreshingly little guitar
Superpinkymandy/Beth Orton & William Orbit: Better than Madonna (and William Orbit)
etc etc etc
generic: “Live in concert”
Frank Zappa’s Overnite Sensation “Smutty jazz funk”
Metallica “Justice for all” – “one over ten”
“The Essential Judas Priest” – Essential my arse.
“difficult second album” aka “tell me what to think..”
compared to Tom Robinson….
The answer, as always, is
Oasis : Be Here Now
Play Once Only
