I’ve been confined to barracks all week with the lurgy. I watched Everton’s bore draw with Liverpool, satisfied we kept them to nil with such ponderous defenders whose only effort to connect with attacking players was via a long, hopeful hoof. Still, if Calvert-Lewin or Tosun had displayed some composure in front of goal, we could have snatched it in the last ten minutes.
Then, I decided I was going stir crazy, so I got off my backside and went into town, a six mile, twenty minute round trip soundtracked by the very wonderful Vin Gordon & The Real Rock Band. I know a spot where I can park for an hour for free. I reckon I spent 60p on petrol.
HMV was great. Lots of stuff to look at. The prices were competitive, too. I bought Jonny Greenwood’s Phantom Thread and Daniel Avery’s Song For Alpha at the same price I would have paid on Amazon, excluding postage & package. No Amen Dunes and I decided not yet for Young Fathers and Jeff Rosenstock, making me save some money for a later day and, arguably, save my ears.
Waterstones was a bit of a disappointment. Not a great deal of music book choice but, to be fair, I was more interested in price comparisons. They had quite a few copies of Dylan Jones – David Bowie: A Life. Any good, anyone?
WH Smith was the business. Still had a Who Mojo, which I snapped up given the praise in these parts for the CD, plus The Beatles Red Issue, both costing me less than on the internet.
Time was I’d spend all day in just those three shops but the hour free parking kept me disciplined. Quick nip to Boots for Paracetamol, then home in time for Bahrain qualifying.
All in all, a very pleasant and productive retail experience, much more satisfying than poring more money into the tax dodgers’ coffers. Although I will still need online for my weird choices, such as Orquesta Akokan, I’ve resolved to do this real life shopping more often. It’s fun.
