What does it sound like?:
Inspired by Tiggerlion’s pre Christmas look at the Human League, Bargepole casts his beady eye over this 3 cd reissue of Yazz’s 1988 album ‘Wanted’.
You might raise an enquiring eyebrow as three cds does seem an awful lot of music to come out of this single vinyl album, which comprised only nine songs.
In fact, the first cd augments that original release with a further nine tracks – the most interesting of these by far is the non album single ‘Treat Me Good’, the remainder being single edits and B sides.
Whether you like cds 2 and 3 depends on how fond you are of the 12” mixes which were so in vogue at the time. There are no less than 24 of these extended versions on offer – admittedly some have never been released in the UK before, but they do become rather wearing to be honest.
The original album is not bad overall, and perhaps surprisingly covers quite an eclectic range of genres from electro pop to jazz, reggae, soul and even a bit of hip hop. Some tracks have of course aged better than others though, and really there’s nothing to touch the two big hits The only Way Is Up and Stand Up For Your Love Rights.
What does it all *mean*?

Blimey. 24 mixes? No doubt people on Superdeluxe.com will still find some missing edit or Belgian 7″ version to get disproportionately outraged about.
As for Yazz – she’s gone all Holier than thou:
