Tara Palmer-Tomkinson died today and I never knew this song existed until five minutes ago. Doctors discovered she had a brain tumour in January last year. I’m way behind the news and gossip me.

Shame. Very troubled girl after her hedonistic youth. I read an article about how her nose had effectively collapsed due to drug abuse in her misspent youth and you can only imagine how awful it was for her after the It Girl period. Clearly she brought it on herself but I feel sad for her. I’m an old softy.

She brought a brain tumour on herself?
Twang says
I mean the damage to her face!
dai says
Oh yes, sorry.
Harry Tufnell says
I remember seeing her playing piano on some TV show, obviously had a musical talent. RIP.

I’ve always had a soft spot for her too. As far as I could see she was a privileged but grittily tough woman and equally was someone who made the most of her natural attributes and managed never to take herself too seriously. And I think that’s a cracking little pop song too; did she write it? It sounds written about personal experience. Far too young to bow out.
Twang says
I wrote her off as one of the privileged minor artistos I love to hate, then I read an unflinchingly honest and self critical article she wrote about her detox and struggle to get sober which changed my mind completely. She was a good sport on Top Gear too, equalling Ross Kemp as the Star in the Reasonably Priced Car circuit time and giving Clarkson as good as he gave.
Black Celebration says
Shame. I thought she was quite funny and I’m sorry to hear that news.

I am as sorry as anyone would be to learn of someone’s death at such a young age.
The BBC report refers to her ‘career’, but what exactly was her ‘career’?
The Good Doctor says
What’s your ‘career’?
attackdog says
Dear Doctor,
I am sure you know perfectly well what I meant – career as in any ‘traditional’ or generally accepted sense.
If there is a new understanding, do enlighten me.

Born of posh lineage but with no fortune to inherit, as far as I recall, she used her connections (as might we all) to forge herself a life as a socialite. Albeit an adaptation of that which suited the times she was active in. I recall her being feisty and quite amusing and fairly down-to-earth.
I too was unaware she sang or had musical talent. Not a bad effort.
It’s always a shame that a person who did no great harm in the world should be struck down relatively early in life by such a nasty thing as a brain tumour.

Taken from this album, released in 2012. Apparently she won Comic Relief Does Fame Academy in 2007 – another programme I would have avoided like the plague.
Leicester Bangs says
Fair play, she must have been doing something right to get her own thread on the Afterword.
Clive says
The ultimate accolade.

Discovery of the week: Tara Palmer-Tomkinson has a sister whose first name is “Santa”.
