What record/track did you last listen to – whether currently playing, last night, whenever? Across the, shall we say, diverse convergence of AW taste can we at least share a genre nevermind, miracle of miracles, the same artist?
No idea why I’m playing this over my egg & Soldiers (apart from the obvious fact Lady W loves it) but there you go…

Last night I listened to Jeff Beck’s Blow By Blow, a secondhand LP I picked up cheap. I’ve been in a bit of an instrumental only mood and this fits the bill pretty well. It’s just nice to tune in to some high class musicianship, tasteful and beautifully recorded with George Martin. She’s A Woman is covered. Some of it’s quite funky with a Stevie Wonder connection. It can seem a bit like hotel lift or lobby music at times. Those instrumental covers of well-known hits that won’t disturb or offend. A touch of cheese. I like it a lot.
Mike_H says
“Scatterbrain” off Blow By Blow is the ultimate dangerous driving track, IMO. I think I’ll play it right now in fact. Loud.
Over the past month I’ve played Melanie De Biasio’s “No Deal”, “Burials In Several Places” by The Radiophonic Workshop, “Bea” by Spindle Ensemble, “Oh Yeah” by Charles Mingus, quite a few assorted Lee Morgan albums, Neil Ardley & The New Jazz Orchestra’s “On The Radio: BBC Sessions 1971”, Kamasi Washington’s “Harmony Of Difference” and a few others.
My last-played track (on random play, Tuesday evening) was the disappointingly sloppy version of “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” from Jimi Hendrix’, off “Wild Blue Angel – Live At The Isle Of Wight”.
He sounded tired and just going through the motions.
Mike_H says
Later that afternoon, while having a shave in preparation to venturing out, this popped unexpectedly into my head. Not in my collection anymore due to the Peel tape it was on having got chewed and discarded. Found it on YouTube though.

Annoyingly – because it will sound *entirely predictable* from me (but is actually much, much rarer than you’d think) – aside from listening right now to the fabulous Moz Mass in the OP, the last thing I listened to was the recent John McLaughlin album ‘Live At Ronnie Scott’s’, last night. Before that it was a 2CD ‘The Heart & Soul of Tal Farlow’ and earlier yesterday it was a terrific rustic/ambient LP I was given a while back, ‘Guga Hunters of Ness’, by the Dead Rat Orchestra and before that it was the excellent Shane Pacey Trio’s ‘Watch Out!’

‘Junjo Presents The Evil Curse Of The Vampires’
It’s a reissue of ‘Scientist Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of The Vampires,’ retitled after a dispute between producer, Junjo, and Scientist, who mixed the dub versions.
The dub disc is brilliant (bettered only by ‘Scientist vs Prince Jammy’ in my opinion) while Junjo’s hijacking of the name is made a lot easier to bear thanks to a second disc of the original non-dubbed-up tracks that comes with it, allowing you to compare, contrast, even stitch together your own discomixes if you want.
They’ve done this with all the albums in the series. It’s proper reggae heaven.

My favourite of those classic Scientist dub albums on Grensleeves in “Heavyweight Champion”
On the “Junjo Presents” vinyl reissue, Scientist is such a persona non grata that the illustration on the album cover has been tampered with, so that a large white card completely obscures Scientist’s face. Harumph!
As you say, Leicester, each of these dub sets has ben reissued with an LP of its accompanying vocal tracks. I’ve owned the “Heavyweight Champion” set for a couple of years, but have never played the Barrington Levy vocal album that’s included. Maybe I should. But in such circumstances, somehow, I always prefer the dub set. It’s just how I roll, I suppose.

80s is not a genre its a period. What I wrote at the end of the Master of Puppets review:
One final point is that clearly in the world of heavy metal the 80s was a decade of continual invention and progress. Another example of how the anti-80s faction is just wrong, wrong, wrong and just need to look beyond the top ten at almost every area of music to find great things going on.

Over lunchtime I was wandering the streets of Edinburgh listening to the second album from Autobahn, having just bought a ticket to see them live next week.
Fewer tracks on this one where it’s so clear that they *really* like Joy Division (especially in the vocals), but the title track is one of the ones where the ghost of Ian Curtis still looms large.
Lovely big pounding gothic/motorik stuff though, despite some of it’s influences being a little too obvious.
Paul Wad says
Right now I am listening to a track called You Love Me, which is the last track from the album Anchovies by Apollo Brown & Planet Asia. Good album, as most featuring Apollo Brown are, but they have overdone the fake crackling thing that many modern hip hop albums like to add to the tracks to make it sound like a worn vinyl record does. Ironic that we moved from vinyl to CD all those years ago to avoid that kind of sound ruining the music!
Actually, I paused halfway through writing the above to change the record, so I am now listening to the title track from Common Sense by J Hus. No crackling on this one.

Houses Of The Holy by Led Zeppelin – oh no, wait, its actually From The Fires by Greta Van Fleet…
Largely very good, except for a piss-poor version of Sam Cooke’s A Change Is Gonna Come.
H.P. Saucecraft says
Piss-poor? PISS-POOR!? Nah. You may think it pales next to the original, that’s your right, but they make the song their own and the vocals are nicely emotive. Shows an unexpected possible direction for them – Led Zep wouldn’t have touched it. What I’m saying, basically, is nyer.

Got the Dylan gospel deluxe box for my birthday on Monday. Watched the dvd and played CDs 1 to 3 so far. Abraham, Martin and John on the dvd is a treasure. All the cds are great so far, although disappointed they lopped off Bob’s Leadbelly story from the start of Caribbean Wind.
Also got those 2 Bob Stanley Sainsburys compilations. Sound great. Both comps are strong till side 4 which is a weaker selection in both instances. The Coming Into Los Angeles is the better comp I think. The Monkees song (As We Go Along) was a real surprise to me – never heard it before. Judee Sill – The Kiss – played at Jackie Leven’s funeral – is simply stunning.

I went to the opening night of a record club in Sheffield the other night. Apparently, it started off in a bloke’s garage in Pontefract, where he and his mates listened to an album in silence and then spent a couple of hours discussing it over a few beers. They then moved it to a pub in Pontefract and now run that one alongside the new Sheffield one.
They must have some contacts, because they got guests along like Howard Marks, whilst they were still using the garage and have had plenty of decent guests since. Anyway, for the opening Sheffield night they changed the format slightly and had Clinton Heylin as the guest to discuss Dylan’s holy trilogy and the new boxed set. He played some tracks that were on the boxed set, as well as some that didn’t make it, along with a few of his pre-song raps, that didn’t make the boxed set. One of them, about his new found love for the almighty, was, ahem, quite controversial and would have steered him perilously close to the status afforded Salman Rushdie, so that one’s best left untouched, but others would have improved the set, had they been included.
I was expecting the night to take a different path, with an argument or two, but Heylin is much more agreeable in person than some of his writing would have you believe. Yes, he remains cocksure of his standing amongst Dylan experts, but he did it with good humour and was an engaging speaker. He was at the studio in Brooklyn when the tapes were delivered to start work on the new boxed set and he said there were many crates of tapes, as just about every show on the tours were recorded. Fortunately, he saw that the tape with the show containing the version of Caribbean Wind that made it onto the set was right at the top of the first crate.
It was a good night though and some future nights have been booked, including Nick Banks from Pulp presenting Cut by The Slits. If you’re in the Sheffield or Pontefract area they’re well worth checking out.
Artery says
I know Clinton Heylin quite well. He is indeed very agreeable to chat to. His writing can come over as insufferably opinionated, but he knows his stuff and also likes Jackie Leven’s music, which is how I came to know him.

That’s definitely dodgy… Kraftwerk’s early albums were reissued by the mighty international Germanofon label.
fitterstoke says
I can live with it….might never have heard it, otherwise…..
ganglesprocket says
Usually I am a bit vague about what exactly I have listened to, but I can say that the last seven have been:
Murmer
Reckoning
Fables Of The Reconstruction
Life’s Rich Pageant
Document
Green
Out Of Time
Yup, I have been listening to REM in the order of release. Apart from Automatic For The People I don’t think I have listened to some of these for bloody years (played them so much when younger I guess).
Folks, they have aged really well. REM were just ace weren’t they?
Freddy Steady says
Fables to Out of Time for me. Been playing a lot of that period myself recently…you’re right, it has aged well.
The first couple of albums were a bit too weak for me, maybe just the overall sound. Perfect Circle though…gosh.
Rigid Digit says
I maintain Monster is a brilliant album
ganglesprocket says
Monster was pretty much where they began to lose me. But I haven’t got there yet. Automatic For The People is on RIGHT NOW!

bungliemutt says
I do like a bit of early music, and have been spinning this for the last week or so. Arvo Part seems like a natural partner to the Byrd and Tallis that features on the rest of this blissful offering from The Sixteen.
And the loss of Tom Petty is still felt quite keenly in Bunglie Towers, where many of his albums have been on fairly steady rotation since the beginning of October.
duco01 says
Agree about the Deer’s Cry. It’s a fine disc, with the 20th century Pรคrt pieces blending seamlessly with the 16th century Tallis and Byrd.
Have you heard the “Scattered Ashes” collection, Bunglie?
It’s performed by Magnificat, directed by Philip Cave and including the great Steven Harrold (tenor), known for his work with the Tallis Scholars. A 2 CD set, containing 8 exquisite pieces. A nice mixture of Early Music big names (Palestrina, Josquin des Prez, Gombert) and more obscure material (Orlande de Lassus). It’s on Linn records, and so sound quality is absolutely immaculate. For any early music enthusiasts of the Afterword, I assure you you can’t go wrong with this set. I often reach for it late on a winter’s evening….
bungliemutt says
Damn that 1-click ordering from the Dodgers.
duco01 says
You won’t regret it, Bunglie. It’s worth it for the version of des Prez’s “Miserere” alone.
Lodestone of Wrongness says
“and more obscure material”….more obscure than what, asks a friend?
May you stay forever young, Ducs
duco01 says
I thank you, Lodey – but on this thread, Bunglie and myself are staying forever ancient!
bungliemutt says
Byrd or Byrds – Iโm always at the cutting edge.
Moose the Mooche says
Renaissance Fair – two for the price of one.

I’m still on a steady diet of Loney dear and Moses Sumney. Last night finished with Loney dear from beginning to end – the final track is called “There Are Several Alberts Here” and is only on YouTube in a muddy rehearsal version (but it’s still a lovely song):
Lodestone of Wrongness says
Do you mind if I include that in the Duco01 spot?
Moose the Mooche says
Fulham Fallout! Fulham Fallout! It’s Friday…. hey-ho let’s go!
…er…
minibreakfast says
To the “Friday toilet”, eh?
Moose the Mooche says
Sorry… gotta Go Go Go.
Moose the Mooche says
Well… that really was a fallout.

I’m just listening to 2017 stuff at the moment, getting ready for the all important Afterword best of the year poll. So over the last 24 hours it’s been Magnetic Fields, Laura Cannell, GY!BE, Fleet Foxes, The Moonlandingz, Jane Weaver, Richard Dawson, Mary Casio & Hadal Sherpa. Another couple of weeks I should know what’s what.
Moose the Mooche says
No Nick Knowles?

Knowlesmas is over. Happy New Du Beke! https://www.amazon.co.uk/Top-Anton-Du-Beke/dp/B076LTJ2F1

The Lionel Blair de nos jours. A good all-rounder, just like Lionel.
minibreakfast says
Ah, but can he pull off 12 Angry Men in under two minutes?
Blue Boy says
Who can forget the look on Una Stubbs’ face as she watched him do so?
ip33 says
I didn’t even know who Nick Knowles was until I just looked him up.
I think he’s some sort of singing builder?
bungliemutt says
Nickโs a huge talent, as I think this clip makes abundantly clear.
DogFacedBoy says
It’s a pleasure to see that despite unwarranted media coverage and plugging via his brother in ‘The biz’ the Knowles album is a Bernard Matthews oven ready floppy turkey
minibreakfast says
Yep, already down from 9.99 to 5.99 on Amazon, which is what I’ve been waiting for – the perfect gag gift for Xmas!
The thing is, do I wait a bit longer to see how low it gets?
Moose the Mooche says
It’s turkey chicken!
minibreakfast says
Haha!

Some fun reviews on there, though.
H.P. Saucecraft says
“I played this in my car and after 3 minutes the CD player auto ejected the disc with so much force that it shattered the rear window of my 1.2l Corsa and decapitated an elderly lady walking down the street.”
“Bought it for my dog…he has now left me.”
bungliemutt says
Alternatively….
“My father was in a coma until I played this by his bedside in faint hopes of rousing him.
He’s dead now.
Thanks Nick”.
Moose the Mooche says
Oh yes.
Another 5-star review in full: “Strangely enough it won’t be up there with the classics but you have to give him 5 out of 5 just for pulling that bird who used to be the cleaner in Emmers”

Polling has finished, I say polling has finished!
As we speak a team of 2nd year Drama Students are working their way through all the posts and using the latest in digital technology and state-of-the-art stuff I can’t even begin to understand the results should be available sometime today (although my assistant , the lovely Rachel, has warned me a recount is highly possible)!
Try not to get too excited, play some mellow music, tune out (but tune in later today or possibly next week)
Leicester Bangs says
New Morrissey album.
First listen, and I’m not too impressed so far.
Lodestone of Wrongness says
I have had a word with Rachel and she says you are in (as is your vote)
Leedsboy says
The new Beck album. Full of bangers as the kids parents say.
Lodestone of Wrongness says
Rachel is not sure she can squeeze you in but she’ll do her best
Leedsboy says
I’ll try to be inconspicuous.
Vince Black says
I’m listening a lot these days to The Story of Sonny Boy Slim by Gary Clark Jr. Someone kindly shared it with me about 18 months ago and I’ve been slow getting round to it. The whole album flows very nicely. I love the guitar wailing on this
Sewer Robot says
Just finished listening to the latest “We Have Concerns” podcast. They were talking about a (real) fungus that takes over ants and makes them act against their own will. It would only take a bit of tweaking by some evil genius to boost its effects and make the events of this film possible:

Hope Of Heaven, the first and last album by Hull band Nyam Nyam. I can’t get on with the bloke’s voice though. No wonder he went on to edit Mojo magazine. That’s right, Paul Trynka; he wot wrote that Bowie book.
minibreakfast says
It’s growing on me a bit. I like this:
Moose the Mooche says
Nothing good could ever come out of Hull. Even the M62 is rubbish.
duco01 says
“Nothing good could ever come out of Hull.”
Oh, come on, Moosey, what about “The Whitsun Weddings?” You’ve gotta admit, that’s pretty good. I likes me a bit of Larkin….
Moose the Mooche says
I was jerkin.
I pass Larkin’s old house several times a week. It’s now overgrown with ivy and stuff, the blue plaque barely visible. “Phil” would probably have liked that.
Lodestone of Wrongness says
Have you read the rules? Rachel says “no”
minibreakfast says
You have no longer have control of your thread. It’s too successful!
Lodestone of Wrongness says
Looks for plug, can’t find it . Oh well, last track before bed as I make the herbal tea: Radio Free Europe, Radio Free..

Junglejim says
I was listening to ‘Out Of This World’ from John Coltrane’s ‘ challenging’ ‘ Live In Japan’ album this aftenoon – I thought it was out of earshot of everyone else in the house, but Mrs Jim popped up behind me to say ‘ Christ, I thought someone was f*cking about with a balloon, letting the air out with a screech! Might have known it was some jazz shite of yours..’
It’s great to be on the same wavelength ain’t it?
Lodestone of Wrongness says
Mrs Jim/Lady W – the same person?

Well, Rachel and her team (Nic, Sam and a young man from Armenia) have been behind locked doors all night. An exhausted Sam just told me “Rachel has everything in hand”.
The flood of late entries is not making her job any easier but she never complains, Rachel, she just gets down to it.
Results soon, results soon!
