What does it sound like?:
This is a huge thirteen cd box set gathering together in remastered form the albums recorded for Vertigo and Polydor between 1973 and 1985.
As usual with Vangelis, you get a whole range of styles, ranging from classical to rock, from ambient to jazz, with some world music thrown in for good measure.
There’s many delights on offer here – for example, China, an album I’ve always had a soft spot for, Mask, Chariots of Fire and Soil Festivities are well worthy of anyone’s time and attention.
Of special interest to me though are the three albums he recorded with Jon Anderson of Yes. – some great songs such as The Friends of Mr Cairo, I Hear You Now, I’ll Find My Way Home and the sublime State of Independence. Anderson’s vocals and the keyboards of Vangelis make a perfect combination.
There is a fantastic range of music here, although not too much in the way of bonus material – just four tracks, ones of which is previously unreleased while the other three make their first appearance on cd, having been single B sides.
What does it all *mean*?
Unfortunately, due to licensing issues presumably, his excellent Heaven and Hell album is not included, and nor is his seminal soundtrack to Blade Runner, but I suppose you can’t have everything!
Goes well with…
Keyboard/ instrumental/ ambient, Yes.
Might suit people who like…
A box set as weighty as the man himself!
