The normal mix was enough, we don’t need a bloody surround mix too. The World has gone bonkers. Only in Tiggerlions World is that up there with his best albums. Take away the emotion of his death and it wouldn’t be in top 10.
Johnny Concheroo says
Absolutely right. Watching the Last Five Years on TV it struck me that there are no real songs to speak of on the recent Bowie albums, it’s all about soundscapes, ambience and production techniques. Fair enough if that’s your thing, but nothing from the last 25 years really matches the song writing craft he demonstrated on those 70s albums.
MC Escher says
Hmm, I think you might be suffering from a slight case of “post-Classic Rock Syndrome” JC. I prescribe you keep warm, have a lie down with plenty of warm Clapton, Zappa and Zeppelin at regular intervals.
Johnny Concheroo says
Are you a doctor, then?
Well, I never really bothered.
MC Escher says
I’m a DD. That’s a Doctor of Dame.
Kid Dynamite says
Yebbut it’s exactly that emphasis on soundscape and texture that appeals to me on Low and “Heroes”. I’d always rather to listen to Warsawza than Sound & Vision.
Johnny Concheroo says
That’s fine of course but I’ll always lean towards the songwriters craft
Tiggerlion says
Plenty of songwriter’s craft on his 21st Century albums .The one with the least is probably The Next Day which rocks like a bitch. Blackstar has more melody than Station To Station including the cover version. There is nothing quite as soundscapy as “Heroes” or Low. Listening to Heathen right now. There are as many songs as his 70s pomp.
MC Escher says
Heathen is my favourite C21 Bowie LP. Just full of gorgeous melodies (Slip Away, Everyone Says ‘Hi’), allusive incantations (Sunday, Slowburn) and singalong anthemic rockers (Afraid, Cactus, Slow Burn, I’ve Been Waiting For You).
Some have citicised it for its over-polished sound but to me it’s just right for the songs.
Mousey says
I agree. The title track of Blackstar has a beautiful melody
Johnny Concheroo says
If you watch Rick Wakeman demonstrate why Life On Mars is so good on the first Bowie doco, that’s what I’m talking about. Nothing to do with melody (although that’s there in spades too) just the sheer inspired construction of the song. You can actually hear the nuts and bolts of how it was written. With modern technology and people like Eno producing we’ll probably never see songs like that again
Baron Harkonnen says
I don`t agree @stevet, but that`s nowt new between me and thee. As JC says the `songs` are more `soundscapes` and a 5:1 mix would enhance them. Anyway you don`t have to listen to it.
SteveT says
@Baron Harkonnen I know I don’t have to listen to it – I have it, its okay but not in his top 10 that’s for sure. The ‘soundscapes’ on Low are much better in my opinion. The are some good ideas on Blackstar but to me they don’t seem fully realised – possibly an indication it wasn’t quite ready? We will never know. I am not decrying his new stuff in any way – In fact Love is Lost the extended Steve Reich mix from The Next Day is probably his best track since Low.

Intro, verse, chorus, verse, bridge, chorus, Outro.
Baron Harkonnen says
Is that a comment on ★ bri or a new Blog?
bricameron says
The same rules apply Baron.😉
