You can waste an enjoyable 13 minutes with this mini programme on YouTube on the top 10 coolest instruments and also rans. Number 1 is predictable but there are some great clips along the way.

Pretty shite examples of each and every instrument in that clip. Obviously “for civilians”, but still..
Q: Is the Bass Guitar really actually cool? Are you sure?
It’s far too generic to just cite “The saxophone”.
The alto sax is ridiculously over-exposed in nearly all popular genres. Not remotely cool anymore.
Tenor sax only seems to get used in r ‘n’ b and jazz these days. Never in rock or pop. Not so cool as it could be.
The baritone sax retains some coolness due to it’s use in those classic Motown choons. Plus it does look cool onstage. Especially when played by a pretty woman.
The bass saxophone is just too unwieldy for stage use. It could be ultra-cool if a niche was found.
The bass clarinet is already ultra-cool.
The soprano sax doesn’t really have credentials of cool any more, despite Coltrane and Didier Malherbe.
The harmonica. Say what?
Whoever introduced Bob Dylan to the harmonica should be tarred, feathered and paraded through all the world’s major entertainment venues on a rail. They are responsible for serious crimes against music. Ditto whoever inspired Neil Young to start torturing that instrument.
A totally different story with Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson II etc.
That’s how you do it Bob!

I agreed with some selections of instruments but the illustrations of them in use were pretty naff, I thought.
Obviously not made for hardcore music lovers like wot we get hereabouts.
I was very disappointed that the electric guitar was the #1. I do enjoy hearing a well-spanked (or picked or strummed or bottlenecked) electric guitar, but they, like myself, ain’t the height of cool these days. Acoustics are cooler now, as are pianos, but I reckon there are a whole raft of Apps-for-Macs that outrank the electric guitar these days.
Twang says
Ahh but apps aren’t instruments. You might be able to make music with them up to a point but they aren’t instruments.
