A gold star for anyone who can find a stranger cover version of a Donovan track – here’s The Bread and Beer Band with a young Elton John on keyboard, performing “Mellow Yellow” trapped in an elevator speaker or something… Never released…can’t think why…
Lyndsey Buckingham covered Try For The Sun on one of his crap solo albums. It’s awful. And he changed the original’s “gypsy boy” to a “gypsy girl”. I think that was a twattish thing to do. Like he was worried that people might think he was gay or something. Eejit.
I think the whole album was covers and I made a point of listening to it just to see what he did with the Donovan song (one of my faves from Fairy Tale).

I’ve posted this more than once on this site, but you can never have too much of Richard Thompson’s take on Season of the Witch

It is a fabulous song. I have 11 cover versions of it and even the DONOVAN one isn’t that bad.

If you have more than half an hour to spare, turn an ear to The Allman Brothers and Mountain Jam (aka There Is A Mountain).
I suspect DONOVAN taught Duane Allman all he knew and this was him repaying the debt.

Here’s a lounge version of Sunshine Superman by Mel Torme

A bit of a cheat here as Donovan wrote this for Marianne Faithful and then did a version himself.
It’s a lovely song and I prefer his version, particularly the one from his live album. It captures the lonelier side of Swinging London so well.
Another Hurdy Gurdy Man from …..The Butthole Surfers!
Rigid Digit says
Marianne Faithful also covers Sunny Goodge Street
Johnny Concheroo says
Kate Bush did a good version of Lord Of The Reedy River. She changed the lyrics to first person I see.

Donovan wrote that especially for Dana Gillespie and I don’t think he ever recorded it himself.

And it was also covered by Steampacket II

Like Marianne Faithfull, Mary Hopkin covered several Donovan songs on her early Apple LPs. This is Happiness Runs

The list of Donovan covers is probably vastly more extensive than the casual observer might suspect.
27 covers of Catch The Wind alone!
