The following are first lines or part of the first line from 20 Prog acts. The only clue is that in the main they are from the classic era but there a couple of new ones in there.
1 point for the name of the artist and 1 for the song title. Usual rules apply ie no cheating (as if) ! Ill close the quiz either when its run out of steam or at latest end of Saturday.
The winner will receive a vinyl to cd transfer of an obscure prog album (to be revealed later – when I’ve done it !) + of course a copy of the latest Feedback File album (which most definitely isn’t prog) – unless you are Lando Cakes in which case a copy of the previous one.
I’m expecting nothing less than 20 points to win this given the love of the genre on the AW. Good luck !

Feedback_File says
I like your keenness Johnny and Im sure the honest people on this site will avert their eyes !!
Spotcheck Billy says
13 Zombie Woof – Frank Zappa
Johnny Concheroo says
Can’t believe I didn’t spot that one. Now we’re going to debate about whether Zappa is really prog or not.
Spotcheck Billy says
Ok, um, Chester Thompson played in Zappa’s band in the early/mid 70s. He went on to be the live drummer with Genesis for, well forever
But no, FZ is not prog, any more than FZ is jazz rock. FZ is in a class of one.
Johnny Concheroo says
Many years ago Rhino put out a box set of prog rock tracks titled Supernatural Fairy Tales. It was a decent collection, except the Americans seemed to think that Zappa and, er, Roxy Music were worthy of inclusion in a prog box set.

Twang says

Bargepole says
What about no 1 ? Shame on you 😉
Vulpes Vulpes says
Hint for Twang – try imagining number 7 with a Dutch accent, like the gay coppers have on the Fast Show….
Artery says
Oddly, I played number 3 just last night. I love it to bits.
Vulpes Vulpes says
The whole album is ace.
thecheshirecat says

I’ll make your day FEEDBACK – I ain’t got a clue about any of these – I won’t spoil your comp. by releasing any answers – AS I DON’T KNOW NUTHIN’.
When the album list is finally released – I will be very surprised to find out I may have 4 or 5 of them (or even more) – stored/tucked away somewhere.
You now the adage “Can’t put Brains In Statues” that just may apply here – so there’s no ears for listening.
deramdaze says
I got one.
The first one.
I’m off to have a rigorous cleansing.
And this unfortunate knowledge that I appear to have acquired stays between us, right?
In fact, couldn’t we just call ‘Living In The Past’ psych, blues, 60s pop or folk for my own piece of mind?
Junior Wells says
point of order Sir,
How can we score points if we don’t know whether we are right or wrong?
Feedback_File says
Calm down, calm down progsters
I have to own up that I didn’t stipulate not to give the answers out. When I did the last one ‘the non prog lyric round’ a couple of months ago this didn’t happen so I assumed same would work.
Anyway I hope its still been fun.
So the plan was and is for you to PM me with your answers and I shall then reveal the winner when the quiz close – probably tonight now as I think most answers are out there. So I shall rely on your
estimable honesty to just to send me the ones you actually knew before reading the others.
Currently PaulVincent is in the lead
God its hard being a quizmaster here !
Feedback_File says
The quiz is now closed and PaulVincent is the winner with an estimable 21 points. Prize will be winging its way to your shortly. The obscure prog album is ‘Autumn Grass’ by Continuum which I’ve had since 1971. Quite hard to get hold of now I think. It’s an interesting album – 1 side is 3 classical style pieces and the second is a side long suite which is by a modern British classical composer and its quite ‘out there’ (he calls it ‘a ritualistic invocation’ !) but I like it.
Thanks to everyone for participating (I will ensure to clarify the rules for the next one !)

Thanks to FF for a fun quiz, reminding me of a few old favourites I’ve not played for a while – and for his generosity and making it a prize quiz! Lovely that this is a place where you can have a lyrics quiz, trusting the regulars not to dive off into Google (Google, the killer of quiz fun). Still can’t believe I missed the Caravan line!
Feedback_File says
Glad you enjoyed it Paul. There is vast wealth of totally useless but wonderful knowledge of things Prog in Afterword Land.
Between all the posts above I think most of the questions were identified apart from possibly the Colosseum and Quintessence ones (Colin H where were you ?)
