I strolled into the Record Centre in Ottawa’s up and coming Hintonburg area at around 9.45. Was busy, but not too crazy. Picked up Manics Holy Bible picture disc, The Dame’s Changes pic disc (single) and a double sided Dark Globe purple vinyl single with Syd B on one side and REM on the other. A non RSD specific purchase was Tour de France double LP. Drew a blank on a Zombies LP and a Bob Dylan/The Band release was too expensive.
Followed that with an awesome doughnut at SuzyQ’s (possibly the best I ever had) and a good coffee. In both places I was asked how my RSD was going “Very well, thanks”.
minibreakfast says
Lovely! There’s no participating shop in my county, but I asked my little brother, who was RSD-ing it in Cambridge, to look out for a couple of things. I wasn’t hopeful, but he managed to get me the Small Faces Ogden’s picture disc. I won’t get my mitts on it for a while, but I’m very happy.
Today is Car Boot Sale Record Day, which of course beats the crap out of RSD!
Chris says
The Ogden’s isn’t a picture disc. Just your standard black wax. Picked up mine at Normans Records in Leeds, but their delivery arrived with some pretty bad outer sleeve damage, which they neglected to tell customers about. Discovered it when I unpacked at home. It will be going back this week….
davebigpicture says
When I was a kid, the local 2nd hand shop always had about 10 of the round sleeved version cluttering up the racks.
minibreakfast says
Ah, thanks for the info. Quite glad it’s not a pic disc actually, as apparently they sound less good. Really pleased to have an LP though, I’ve given up hope of finding one at a boot sale!
Chris says
Oh it’s a lovely package. Nice (round) book. Hoping to pick up an undamaged copy once I’ve taken the other back
minibreakfast says
Oh, well I do appreciate a lovely package, fnarf.

Can’t locate it right now, but I think I got a pic disc a few years ago of this one.

(With apologies for venturing off at a tangent so soon in the thread.)
I didn’t get anything as there is isn’t a shop near where I live and don’t have the time or money on what for me is a working to travel a couple of hours on a speculative journey.
Anyway, my prime curmudgeonly point is this. I am increasingly frustrated by an industry that now seems to prioritise an annual gimmick fest over everything else. At the other end of the spectrum I ordered and pre-paid for the Go-Betweens vinyl reissued last year. I still don’t have them and the shop that I ordered them hasn’t bothered replying to my latest query as to their whereabouts. Perhaps the industry and shops might considder concentrating on their day to day business rather than selling contrived collectibles.
Rant over.

I was amazed (and delighted) to get the Roxy Music ‘Ladytron’ 10″ – unabridged, Steven Wilson remix (a trailer for what I understand to be a 9 disc super deluxe box around their first album). There are apparently only 1000 of the 10″s, but several of them had ended up in Belfast. I also acquired the Pretty Things EP. And then came home for croissant and coffee…
dai says
Saw many here, I wonder if these “limited release” figures are at all accurate.
Colin H says
I was wondering the same thing. But I didn’t want it for its rarity value: I love the first Roxy Music LP and I’m excited by the idea of a Steven Wilson rtemix (within a multi-disc set). I imagine 1 disc is the original album remixed, 1 or 2 discs will be BBC sessions from the period, 1 disc will be non-album sides ( V Plain, Pyjamerama etc) and alternate takes, 1 disc will be DVD video of period performances, 1 disc will be DVD A (endless surround sound, needle-drop, quadrophonic etc versions of the album). And er…. who knows? I can’t quite imagine what the remaining discs in a 9 disc set will be.
I can imagine, though, that I won’t be able to afford it.
Kaisfatdad says
No collectibles for me. I’m not at all interested.
But Pet Sounds here in Stockholm had got it absolutely right. A celebration of the record shop. Live music all day by some excellent local artists and a great atmosphere.
Before my daughter dragged me off to buy her ice cream, I caught one song by Ms Järvinen here so I bought her new album.
LesterTheNightfly says
Didn’t go as I was at work but my friend picked me up The Doors “Strange Days” (mono) and Jethro Tull “Live At Carnegie Hall 1970” from Rough Trade West.
Looking forward to receiving those two!

It was a nice sunny day so I popped into my friendly local store Coda around 3.45 when most of the madness had calmed down. I bought The Waterboys EP and decided £25 was way too expensive for the Robert Plant EP. As always the staff were friendly free refreshments were available and live music had been played in store. I’m glad that RSD helps them to stay in business
retropath2 says
Had a spare hour in Leeds, so went looking for that record shop in Leeds, something to do with elephants. I’d been before, and hadn’t even realised it was RSD. Knew it was in a shopping centre and parked in what looked the right one.
But it wasn’t there any more……….
Cos I was in the wrong shopping centre.
Jus looked it up; it was Jumbo, and George Clinton would have been there when I was.
Never mind. Went and bought a carved table top in Chapel Allerton instead.
She didn’t like it.

Too busy to queue on Saturday, not too fussed about the releases and the hit & miss nature of what the stores are allocated. Instead I went over to Saltaire on Friday and had my own Charity Store Day, followed by beer in the Saltaire brewery. Here are the LPs I picked up.

Stayed tuned to my twitter today, Beanster. I picked up a rather eclectic baker’s dozen at this morning’s boot sale, plus my Car Boot Vinyl Bingo card did quite well 😉

I’m never sharing a tent with that Frieda Hall again.
Zanti Misfit says
I love a bit of Brucie, me. Have you got Mr Entertainment LP, Beany? Classic Forsyth.

Went down to London with my brother to ‘celebrate’. A few observations – the whole scene in London is an opportunity for shops that have absolutely nothing to do with records to promote RSD with discounts on all manner of non-music related items. The population of London regard the day as an excuse for completely loutish behaviour and the amount of pissed up obnoxious people I saw on the streets of the Capital in the middle of the afternoon was astounding.
The street sweepers had their work cut out – the amount of cans, broken bottles and all other detritus on the streets in and around Berwick street was a disgrace.
Plus points? The shops were selling large amounts of non RSD product which is great. I got to see Ryley Walker at Sister Ray and Ron Sexsmith at Rough Trade which were both worth the trip.
Did I blag any RSD targets? No. I wanted the Waterboys EP and the Mark Lanegan/Duke Garwood 7″ both of which were sold out. On the other hand I got the Lucinda Williams vinyl album (the one with side of the road on) which has a live concert download and a Melanie DiBiasi album of remixes which I wasn’t even aware existed. Neither are RSD releases but that’s not the point – shopping in a record store on the day supports the industry which I believe to be important.
Next year I will stick to the more genteel surroundings of Birmingham and Worcestershire.
dai says
I am actually shocked. Can any milestone pass in the UK without using it as an excuse to get pissed. Such behaviour wouldn’t even be considered in Canada let alone carried out. Just friendly behaviour everywhere, but that’s normal I suppose (apart from at hockey matches)
SteveT says
You are right Dai – I think the British are starting to lose what little class we ever had. Now we just act like lowlife louts whenever the opportunity arises to do so. I like a drink with the rest of them but like to think I have some decorum. The sights I saw yesterday were pretty unsavoury.
Moose the Mooche says
In general there seems to now be no distinction between the way people behave in public and the way people behave when they’re at home and no-one’s looking. People turn up on the high street wearing bathrobes at two o’clock in the afternoon, everybody is constantly shouting and chewing and gobbing. Another forty years of this, with everybody getting exponentially worse? I don’t think I can fucking stand it.
Beany says
Possibly a result of this weekend’s FA Cup semi-final games, rather than RSD. Just a guess.
Baron Harkonnen says
You may have something there Beany, I doubt those louts know what a record is.
Harry Tufnell says
I got angry. Type “Record Store Day 2015” into eBay and it already throws back 1,662 results the most expensive being the JCC triangular orange vinyl with bids starting at £200 and the Jurassic 5 Wood Box set at £200 buy it now .
I collect records, I wouldn’t be seen dead joining in this exploitfest.
Chris says
Anyone paying those prices are daft. Or lazy. Or both. JCC still available in at least two of the shops near here at normal prices (well, as normal as RSD RRPs can be….)
Mike_H says
I’d class myself as a non-collector music enthusiast.
Events such as Record Store Day hold no interest for me.
There are no record shops left in my town and none of the decent ones in London will die without my support.
fatima Xberg says
Record Store Day in Berlin is quite strange. Plenty of small shops are participating – around 7 or 8 in the area where I live! – and all the hipsters go there and by 11 o’clock they’re all on their iPhones, exchanging prices with their mates in other shops. And the rare stuff is usually gone by twelve. But there are also big megastores participating (like the 4-floors Dussman emporium on Friedrichstrasse), and as the cool people (of course) wouldn’t want to be seen in such a “tourist-y” store, the vinyl department is much more relaxed. I got my Gov’t Mule double LP (their Stones covers Halloween show) and the Flaming Lips and Roxy Music 10″ in the early afternoon while Calexico did an in-store gig near the jazz vinyl racks. They even had a couple of rarities from RSDs of the past years – R.E.M., 4-LP “Zaireeka”, and a few stray Paul Weller singles.
retropath2 says
Eh, you mean you are supporting a drive to kill ’em off?
fatima Xberg says
I don’t drive.
And in Germany, record shops are not “dying”. In Berlin alone there are two or three new ones opening every year (not only yer typical one-man-and-his-assistant collector shops – there’s a new one on Kurfürstendamm right in the old City-West center, specializing in vinyl, and another really big one nearby, specializing in Classical and World Music). Like book shops, they have adapted to that internet and they all have a different way of focussing on things that Amazon et al cannot offer. Like Joey Burns congratulating me on the Gov’t Mule platter.
Twang says
I noticed we have a new second hand records place in Hitchin but haven’t had time to check it out. There’s a fairly recently arrived second hand shop in Old Stevenage too. Vinyl lives!

Went nowhere near a shop but have the Dexys ‘Don’t Stand Me Down’ purple LP, sounds better than my original and the JAMC ‘Psychocandy Live In Glasgow LP. Have to wait a couple of weeks for my White Stripes Get Behind Me Satan’
dai says
Jealous, except I threw the White Stripes back, overpriced at 50 bucks.
The Good Doctor says
Yes great to see Record Store Ambassador Jack White supporting Record Shops by charging the dealer price of £25 for a reissue LP. It did have a groovy shapeshifting sleeve which was probably quite pricey to produce but that’s a massive unit price and a record shop has no choice but to pass that cost onto their customers.
Items like this are sold on the basis that they will be worth double that on eBay so no matter how much RSD likes to rail against it – the eBay scalping is part of what makes these releases sell (and they did indeed sell).
DogFacedBoy says
The GBMS debut on vinyl * for RSD is red \ white with the lenticular sleeve. When this release was announced it was also revealed that a standard black vinyl issue without fancy pants artwork for the less choosy fan.
Apparently the RSD people asked Ebay not to let any RSD items to be listed on their site this year. The sarcastic laughter is still going on from Ebay Towers. But as always things will come down to RRP or less in six months. If there are mug punters willing to pay idiotic prices then let them.
* yes I know there was a promo vinyl version
DogFacedBoy says
that first paragraph should be. …..will be released later this year

I had plans to go to David’s in Letchworth to get the Tracy Thorn 10″ but I am wiped out by a flu bug I had weeks ago and still have no energy whatsoever so I didn’t get further than the sofa. Where I am now, as it happens.
Baron Harkonnen says
I spent Record Store Day playing vinyl records at home. Amongst them, the new Calexico, Room 237 (wonderful acoustic/electronica soundtrack type thingy), Mathew E. White – `Fresh Blood`, Stornoway – `Bonxie`, a good day.
SteveT says
Baron, that recommendation for Ryley Walker was spot on. Saw him outside Sister Rays yesterday – acoustic solo. Playing the Primrose Green cd as I type this. With a band in tow he is phenomenal – the John Martyn and Pentangle references are there but he is clearly his own man – great voice, magical guitar. Brilliant.
retropath2 says
Just about to e-music him as we speak
Baron Harkonnen says
You will not be disappointed.
The Good Doctor says
As with last year I’ve helped my friends record shop with the heavy lifting around RSD so I spent RSD behind the counter watching other people buy records. It’s been quite an eye opener this year but I think I need to write a full length post about it…especially the second half of the day which involved witnessing a very famous pop star having to clamber through a stock room to escape his fans…..
Once the crowds calmed down I did get a few bits for myself. I’m not keen on RSD being used to promote re-issued Vinyl that would come out anyway, particularly ones that are just plonked out there without anyone consulting the artist but I caved in on the Slowdive blue vinyl which spoke to the fanboy within.
I also chose the Daughter/Warpaint Split 12″, the Levitation 12″ and the Section 25 7″ on Factory Benelux (so great to hear Simon Topping, original singer, with A Certain Ratio singing again). These for me tick all the boxes for RSD releases- good quality, nicely packaged releases with new, or at least previously unreleased music on and they’re all excellent.
There has been quite a lot of flak for RSD this year.
I think again there are still far too many releases and they need to apply more quality control – the pressing plant overdrive just increases the unit costs and hogs the pressing plants for RSD at the detriment of non RSD releases.
I know the RSD organisers baulk at having any quality control over the list but at the very least I’d suggest only one release per Artist – do we really need every LP and single Pulp released on Fire reissued on the same day or 6 Bruce Springsteen re-presses, and I got really confused with all the Wedding Present stuff when I was doing the ordering. There are a lot of releases by less well known artists which will get overlooked if smaller shops decide to order 6 different releases by certain artists that will more likely sell.
DogFacedBoy says
I saw and heard a copy of ‘The Wibbley Brothers Go Weird’ ltd to 500 copies. It made The Fall sound like ELO. Casio keyboard demo setting backing to random yelling. Quite liked the track ‘Dance The Wawazawa thou

I didn’t pick anything up myself, but my brother-in-law picked this up for my birthday (which was the day after) that looks rather marvellous.
Haven’t had a chance to play it yet unfortunately.
This was “normally priced” as – if I understood him right – Vampi Soul put one of these compilations out a year, and coincide it with Record Store Day to maximise their exposure for minimal promotion.
