Music. Some of it’s great, some of it is truly awful and a great deal is just “meh”. And who has time to listen to all of it?* ** ***
Fortunately, in the course of their a strummin’ and a plinkyplonking and a cut’n’pastin’, many of our pop buddies have a habit of hitting upon that one title that completely sums up what they do, thereby providing a helpful shortcut in our quest to identify that which we might “dig”. As a f’rinstance, 10,000 teased out and carefully considered mots justes by the planet’s foremost music scribes will provide the curious with scarcely more information about the band Spiritualized than their one quintessential song title: She Kissed Me (It Felt Like A Hit). All you need to know about Senior Spaceman’s particular goulash combining love, divine grace and winky opioid up-tops is right there in that symphonic oo-er pop referencing pun.
Not a great example? I’m sure you can do better….
*okay, probably Tigger

I would think that Blitzkreig Bop tells you everything you need to know about The Ramones. It’s Bop. It’s Blitzkreig. It’s Blitzkreig Bop.
Stephen G says
Same could be said for most Ramones songs. Which is a good thing.

I’m not sure The KKK took my baby away was an adequate label on the tin…

There are exceptions…

if Slayer is not a big enough clue to the thrash titans preferred stylings…..Angel of Death, the first track on “Reign in Blood” will be enough.

AC/DC – Rocker
For 3 minutes, musically and lyrically, they are Rockin Rockers as Rock can be.
(see also Whole Lotta Rosie, For Those About To Rock, High Voltage … pretty much any one of ’em)

Rescue Blues, like many other songs on Gold was a tribute to his influences, so can’t say it is any more unrepresentative than others such as New York New York, Tina Toledo which are the ones that spring to mind.
Black Celebration says
Difficult Shapes and Passive Rhythms (Some People Think It’s Fun to Entertain)
Actually, this China Crisis LP is far more accessible and tuneful than the title suggests, but it still hints at their nervous, hesitant brand if showmanship i.e. they looked terrified on stage.
Kaisfatdad says
That Spiritualised track mentioned in the OP is a reference to this rather dark song by the Crystals.
Black Celebration says
Bela Lugosi’s Dead – Bauhaus
They’re scary and they’re spooky, they’re altogether ooky. Singing about a creepy guy who played Dracula in black and white films…and he’s dead!

Richard Thompson goes none=more-Richard-Thompson with Drowned Dog Black Night

And this.. is me. Well, my nom d’apresmot anyway.
In 1985, Depeche Mode hope we liked their new direction with an album and song called Black Celebration. An album full of gloom and a less-than-positive take on things.
Sample lyrics – “Celebrate the fact that you’ve seen the back of another black day”.
There’s something quite chilling about world-at-their-feet young people singing about despair. Help! is a great example, also Madness’ astonishing Grey Day.

The Clash – White Riot. Ok we wanna sing about it, rather than do it, but still it’s our mission, a riot of our own

Prince – Beautiful Strange kinda nails it.
Bowie – Loving The Alien
Roxy Music – Remake/Remodel
Bruce Springsteen – Walk Like A Man
Sniffity says
Not so easy with Roxy, IMO – since you’ve got your With Eno, Post-Eno, and Post-Revival (for want of a better term) periods….not sure that Remake/Remodel represents a group that most civilians would probably associate with “Avalon.”
Black Type says
That was the reason for my choice of title (not the song, necessarily) – the way they’ve repeatedly remade and remodelled their sound and image over their career is quintessentially Roxy.

A few self-mocking ones:
Kraftwerk – “Boing Boom Tschak”
The Smiths – “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before”
Markg says
I was going to do Girlfriend in a Coma for the Smiths, but like your Stop me…it was too easy to go for Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now…! How about Tangled up in Blue for Dylan? Why no comments from the multitude of Beatles fanatics…? Be interested to hear your choices…mine is All you need is Love……at this moment in time…!
