What does it sound like?:
Roxy Music guitarist and producer at large Phil Manzanera’s performance at the Curious Arts Festival in July 2015 is captured on this album.
The set is a mixture of his solo material and the inevitable Roxy classics, and is impeccably performed by Manzanera and his band for the occasion. Obviously on his solo material, such as the standouts No Church In The Wild, and 1960 Caracas, his exemplary guitar work is rightly at the forefront of proceedings. Portuguese vocalist Sonia Bernado takes the lead on the Roxy songs, and while it’s initially rather odd to hear these familiar pieces performed by a female voice, she acquits herself admirably, and her interpretations bring a fresh twist and energy to the songs.
What does it all *mean*?
This album showcases a polished performance from a very talented set of musicians, and highlights why Phil Manzanera’s playing is still held in such high regard today.
