Today at Daylight Music, lunchtime at the Union Chapel in That Highbury in That London, Stuart Wilks played the Theme From Coronation Street, in the style of a solemn requiem, upon the chapel’s pipe organ. Aces!

In 2013 at the SM&A festival these guys; Modern Fantazias, played a wonderful symphonic set of pop tunes to an appreciative slightly hung-over mid-day crowd in the blazing sun.
They did Trans Europe Express, and this lovely arrangement of Music for Airports slowly merging into The Passenger, lovely.

BTW, that clip is not from the festival I attended, in case you wondered where the “appreciative” crowd was hiding…but I’ve now found a montage of soundcheck and gig scenes from that very day, with our standing O at the end (well, I was sitting down, but I raised my arms very high whilst applauding…)

None more Afterword for me.
Twas ‘Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head’ played by a consort of crumhorns at an Albion Dance Band gig in the 70s. (Admittedly it wasn’t live but played as interval music)

Not so long ago I saw Jah Wobble and pals (the same band as here) playing this at Under The Bridge, which is a top-notch venue (but with a crap bar) under the main stand at Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge football stadium.

I swear I saw Faith No More doing a cover of Glory Box by Portishead once. I was awfully drunk though.

Actually, having recently watched an ancient documentary about the british blues boom of the 60s, I’m sure the template may be even more the plummy ramble of Alexis Korner.

Oh yes, I definately saw the Breeders do the theme from Buffy The Vampire Slayer!.

Folk festivals often throw up unexpected cover versions. Here’s on e of the best – Hounds of Love for voice and three concertinas.

Danny Wilson doing Knowing Me Knowing You was very funny – but done with real emotion/feeling.

The Polyphonic Spree at David Bowie’s Meltdown Festival 2002. During their set the PA went down. While it was being fixed, the Spree performed an acapella version of Bowie’s Five Years. This link is the closest to re-experience that wonderful moment

The acoustic tent at the Fleadh, some time around the millennium, Richard Thompson, already battling the sound of The Undertones on the main stage leaking into the tent, breaks a string. As he replaces it he leads the audience through a call-and-response Twist and Shout, tuning his guitar as the crowd bellow each line back at him. An astonishing piece of stagecraft.

Sonny Rollins at the Royal Festival Hall, c. 1990. He’s playing a solo and suddenly threw in The Archers theme.

A for effort for Pete Doherty who, armed with an acoustic guitar, tried a version of Billy Jean at the Roskilde Festival. The news of Jacko’s death broke at the time of the festival and many bands attempted a cover version of one of his songs as a tribute.
Well I never! Just found a (pretty amateur) recording of him doing it in Moscow.

Another one from Roskilde 2008. Gnarls Barkley do Radiohead.

This has to be the winner.

Repeating myself again. I saw the very wonderful Calexico a few weeks ago do this
They also did Joy Division’s Love Will Tear us Apart. Shame they didn’t do Crystal Frontier.
