The first album I actually owned was a Christmas Present in 1981.
The highly sought after classic album I received was … Knights Of Laughter by The Barron Knights.
And I know people revise their “first” to make it look a bit cool, but Number Of Te Beast was my actual first – March 1982, Listen Records in Reading, £3.99

Desert Island album: Donald Fagen – The Nightfly
Last Album listened to: Bryan Ferry – Bete Noire
2018 recommendation: Paul Weller – True Meanings
Rigid Digit says
Is that the best Weller album for many a year?
I think it is.
It was a close call between Mr Weller and Eric for me – maybe it’s “time spent” with the album, but Paul just missed the cut
ruff-diamond says
I agree. I’m a big fan of his “late period” albums but I honestly think this is his best one for a long time.

Last album listened to – Elvis Costello’s new one, although now listening to an alternative Bringing It All Back Home by Bob Dylan that I knocked together last night from The Cutting Edge box set
2018 recommendation – I’ll go for my first favourite of the year, Never Come Down by Kooley High. There have been dozens of excellent albums once again this year

Twenty Golden Greats was one of the first albums taped from the Record Library.
Upgraded later to the CD version (re-titled 50 Golden Greats).
The later period is a bit ho-hum, but the early stuff is/was and will probably always be mighty fine.

fitterstoke says
First vinyl I “owned” was a set of classic story records, set to classical music, eg, Treasure Island with Tchaikovsky’s fifth symphony as the background/incidental music….sneaky move by the parents to get the music into me and my sister by osmosis…..it worked, too, except that I now completely associate the music with the stories….I can’t hear Mendelssohn’s violin concerto without thinking of Robin Hood….
dai says

Point of order, Hey Jude was released in the US, contains tracks that never made it on to Capitol albums.

Last Album Bought: Primal Scream: Memphis tapes
Desert Island Album: After Bathing At Baxters
Last Album Listened To: Primal Scream: Memphis tapes
2018 recommendation: Primal Scream: Memphis tapes. Anyone interested in a review?
Rigid Digit says
Give Out … is my go to Primals album.
I’d go as far to say it’s their best.
But … I haven’t got the Memphis Sessions yet, so a big Yes Please to a review
dwightstrut says
Listening to it again now. I’ll try and do a review tomorrow.
Spoiler alert: it’s ****ing fantastic.
Baron Harkonnen says
Gonna get that.
Kid Dynamite says
Yeah, it’s really good isn’t it? I miss tracks like Funky Jam from the released GOBDGU but of the tracks that are on both I reckon the Memphis versions are better every time. Who on earth thought it was a good idea to take those horns off Jailbird?
Rigid Digit says
Horns on Jailbird – now that I have to hear
dwightstrut says
The sleeve notes say that George Drakoulis said of Rocks: “I can’t make this any better, but I can make it stupider.”

* actually yesterday I bought and downloaded the new Bowie box, the new Costello, the Primal Scream, the St, Vincent, the new John Grant and the Edie Brickell, but I’ll go with Edie as that was the last I downloaded.
SteveT says
The new Costello and Primal Scream both splendid.
Was going to buy the John Grant until I heard it was heavy on the synths. I prefer the more organic Queen of Denmark sound. With this one I will try before I buy.
Harry Tufnell says
I’ve got to admit I’m not feeling the love for the new Costello, I really want to so I’ll persevere but nothing yet.
retropath2 says
I feel I daren’t even investigate EC. Too many burnt fingers and too many emperor’s new.

I played it in Dad’s Taxi to football training last night. Underwhelmed.

My National Album Day experience? I took over my local café and played records for what was ended up being nearly five hours. There were civilians in the audience – only one when I started, and more than the café had chairs at the end. Only one asked for The Dark Side of the Moon. Most told me they still listened to albums, but via Spotify. A handful picked up leaflets for the local hi-fi dealer. The Pro-ject turntable attracted lots of interest. It was all rather enjoyable.
First album bought: The Human League – Dare
Last Album Bought: Elma – Dreamland
Desert Island Album: Fabs – Pepper
Last Album Listened To: Who – Live at Leeds
2018 recommendation: The Pony Collaboration – Everything Was Ages Ago

How did your talk go?
fentonsteve says
Very quickly. “Hello. Today is national album day, it’s 3:33pm, café manager Steph chose this album, enjoy.” Or something similar.
Sun 28th will be me trying to put Sgt Pepper in context for an audience of civilians. Fabs nerds might like to stick their fingers in their ears, or to throw rotten fruit. Short and sharp is the aim.

Ah, of course.
You’ll be in fancy dress, complete with Pepper ‘tache, I assume.

2018 album of the year : David Faulkner & Steve Turner, More Tunes about Baggage and Hills – yes, it’s really called that – “English Border Music 1625 – 2017”. I picked this up after a dance in Rutland in February. I know Steve from having danced to his melodeon countless times. David’s border pipes were new to me. I only bought it because of the knowing title, but the album is an utter delight and I must have played it every other day ever since.
There. Bet you wish you’d never asked.

and a fine first album it is.
Dubstar, very impressed on first listen, though less electronic than previous stuff, nice guitars in a johnny marr in electronic kind of way. Clearly not rushed, well crafted pop songs.
Moose the Mooche says
Not rushed? 18 years since their last one… and 11 years since they said they were coming back☺

I like this thread so much I made a playlist
2018 Afterword recommended albums [Track 6] – October 2018
Rather than choose a track from each album I decided to simply use track 6 – It’s a collaborative playlist, so if you prefer a different track to track 6 please add it.
