What does it sound like?:
Mollie Marriott is a Rock singer with a pure, soaring voice. She hits the notes precisely and cleanly without melisma. Yet, she is still able to convey passion, feel and emotion. Think of Shirley Manson or Chrissie Hynde. She writes most of the songs, too, with help, the title track being the only non-original. They are very varied, from balls-out rockers to torch ballads, with all points of the Rock panoply in between. The band is pretty hot, making for an impressively exciting debut album.
She has learnt her trade over the last decade as a backing singer with the occasional step into the spotlight. Her cv includes work with P.P. Arnold, Oasis, Beyoncé, Mutya, Mark Knopfler and Chas & Dave. Her connections are impressive. Paul Weller adds his characteristic guitar lines to two songs, plus his less familiar Hammond organ, and Judy Tzuke contributes a songwriting credit.
When it comes to album dynamics, she presses all the right buttons. She starts with power on Control, hits her stride through Broken and the almost funky Truth Is A Wolf, then softens for Give Me A Reason and Love Your Bones before a strong finish with the grunge of Transformer, the bass-heavy lust of King Of Hearts and a dreamy My Heaven Can Wait. There’s an unexpected false ending, handclaps, an evocative cello, some backward noises and carefully thought-through backing vocals. It’s a classic Rock album full of old-school tricks that sounds thoroughly modern and is a lot of fun.
Mollie will write better songs and make better albums but Truth Is A Wolf is a great start for what will hopefully be a long career.
What does it all *mean*?
2017 is looking like a good year for Rock Star offspring. Dhani Harrison, Lukas Nelson, Justin Townes Earle and now Mollie Marriott have all made excellent albums in keeping with their heritage, whilst very much reflecting their own personality.
Goes well with…
A few beers, a crowd and a willingness to sing along. Mollie is touring soon. These songs should really come alive then.
