A load of bastards who don’t exist anymore give some other bastards some cash for being the best in a nebulous concept exercise . Python sketch made flesh.
Little Benny Clementine. As pointed out by @rosbif on that Twitter – v Antony & The Johnsons but dialled back quite a way on the annoying vocals. I wouldn’t buy it but what the fuck do I know.
Was leafing through Mojo’s top 50 of the year whilst watching. Hardly any of the Mercury nominees are on that or any of the other ‘best of the year’ lists I’ve seen thus far. Which illustrates how utterly random and subject to other influences these things are (subjectivity of course, but also record company influence, market targeting etc etc). Will check out Mr Clementine though.
*pipes up from the back* The Roisin Murphy album is fucking brilliant. It’s the only one of the 12 I’ve heard all the way through, which obviously means it should have one. I like the cut of Benjamin’s jib though, and I’d certainly listen to his record based on what I’ve heard so far.
Did anyone keep watching all the way to the 70-74 programme? Holy Sh*t!!
You often hear kids saying they took up an instrument to help them get girls, but those 70s women had poor pickings (no wonder they so easily believed Bowie was an alien. Him, Ferry and Sir Philip Lynott must have bestrode the seventies streets like shimmering gods..)
I never realised this song was the anthem for a generation:
Not much I admit – but it’s more often than not Blur, Stone Roses, ‘bands’, here’s the new Guy Garvey etc.
If I listen to radio prefer KEXP or KCRW – might hear something new rather than lots of post-lad stuff. Or make sure I am up to date on All Songs or Sound Opinions.
The Jarvis prog is so pleased with its quirkiness, the Fun Young Criminals bloke is dull.
Totally accept that this is a prejudiced ill informed opinion but has been the case on my points of contact.
I like the ethos of 6Music, and I’m so pleased it’s still with us. I particularly like Radcliffe & Maconie and Marc Riley…but I do find some of the presentation a little earnest and patronising. They never stop telling us how deeply they love music (really? who’da thunk it?) and often give the impression that us plebs are really lucky to be receiving the precious gifts in sound that they deign to bestow upon us. The earnestness and desire to explain and ‘educate’ us about some new-fangled noise also grates at times; even Radcliffe does it on occasion. And I have an irrational annoyance about Tom Ravenscroft – I’m sure he’s a nice fella and all, but his place in the team just screams ‘sentimental nepotism’.
Don’t disagree – found Ravenscroft in offensive but its a tough job to follow in those shoes – you’re right whilst I find the tone annoying i would rather it was around.
Increasingly though the special interest shows on R2 are good – Dylan, Disco and if course Bob Harris
You’re wrong about Tom, he’s a good DJ in his own right quite distinct from his Dad and I like the cut of his jib. We’re lucky to have 6Music – Tories and public broadcasting haters would prefer we had only commercial radio blasting out non-stop mainstream rock and I’d rather have some over-earnest 6Music jock than Heart FM any day.
Its a matter of taste – I think the BBC struggles to find the right tone for music coverage across the board, but that’s me.
On the other hand I like NPR – it has introduced me to loads of stuff in recent years. R6 which I admittedly listen to less has done nothing (aside from Freak Zone).

Who is Mr Jam?

Oh great – some reminiscences – why does a ‘cutting edge’ music award have to prattle on about itself in the past?
DogFacedBoy says
There’s a BBC4 documentary “M People Win The Mercury Prize: What the Hell happened?”
SteveT says
Whilst I agree Mercury Prize is a pile of shut what exactly is wrong with R6.

More live! Sekar , great more Jools Holland music ….
timtunes says
Bloody predictive text – Eska
timtunes says
R6 – it’s all post Brit-pop gritty Northern sardonic Jools-influenced – apart from some bits that are OK -eg Freak Zone

The Gaz Coombes is really good – my fave so far

Why do they have ‘genre quotas’ – wouldn’t it be refreshing if it wasn’t diversified – be honest rather than tick boxes

FWIIW, I love BBC 6 music.
timtunes says
‘ why should Ghostpoet be on the list?’
‘I think it’s really deserving’
That cleared that up then

Oh great more winning moments

Having heard all the nominees I have decided I hate all music

5 mins to the award ….oooh…if it’s not Gaz or Jamie I will…..not care much – can I get this hour back?

I heard the winner on some radio show – thought it was alright ish actually

They’re all coming on stage…all artists together…is that something in my eye?
