A package of cylinder and assemble-yourself totally mechanical player could be a big hit with the pointy-bearded hipster-techie demographic.

London’s premier Victorian Anachronistic Punk Rock Four Piece The Men That WIll Not Be Blamed For Nothing return with a second release on the long defunct WAX CYLINDER format.
Following the success of last years Wax release of Music Hall standard ‘Sewer’ -to accompany fifty limited edition copies of debut album Now That’s What I Call Steampunk Volume 1- and due to massive popular demand, the band have completed a second cylinder, this time with the brand new, original song ‘Free Spirit’.
Written and produced by the band themselves and transferred to Wax Cylinder by the UK’s formost authority on the format, Adrian Tuddenham, who created each cylinder by hand, the song tells the story of a Victorian strumpet of loose morals and looser corset, and in the tradition of the great music hall folk songs involves a big sing-a-long chorus, some bad behaviour and a death and haunting.
This version of the song, featuring the band being accompanied by the lovely LJ Rich on the Old Joanna, is unique to the cylinder release, and will not appear in this form on the group’s upcoming second album. Each purchase will include a free download of the track and instructions detailing how to build a cylinder player on the cheap!
Only 50 of these items will ever be made, each costs £25.
Wax Cylinders, also known as Phonograph Cylinders, or ‘Edison Cylinders’ (after their inventor, Thomas Edison) were a common way of listening to music from 1888, right up to the First World War, but fell out of a favour for the more robust discs including shellac and, later, vinyl records. The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing are now responsible for two of the very few commercial releases on the format in over 90 years….. and this latest release, on their own ‘LEATHER APRON’ label, has totally wiped out the UKs stocks of blank (individually handmade) wax cylinders !
I can’t help thinking this a bit of a riposte to Superdeluxe.com who wrote an open letter to Macca complaining bitterly about several tracks (these included) being left off the (very expensive) box set and then only being offered as download code. Is this a birrova dig at them, or just some regular RSD nonsense? . I wonder how much it will retail for – a 3 track cassette single in the old days would be £1.99.
I’ll hazard a guess at £15 quid for this

Idiotic especially as a bunch of tracks in the (hugely expensive) box set are download only. Maybe they should be released on 8 track ?

I’m holding out for the wax cylinder.
