Attack of the Grey Lantern is 21 years old this year and about to be given the full re-issue treatment and released on 8th June.
I really liked them back in the day and a recent revisit has not disappointed.
This is a top tune.

I’ve always liked the singles but it’s a long time since I heard the whole album. Chris Hawkins played a track last week and, without knowing who it was, I thought it sounded like it was Tears For Fears. I would consider that a very poor reappraisal and shall just stick to the singles.

I was just listening to the album track “Disgusting” and I thought it sounded like Tears For Fears in places during their late career slightly over produced period.

This album going to number one was such a strange moment… just before the Britpop bubble definitively burst in 1998 (the year The Bluetones were dropped by their record company only two years after having a number one album) I liked it at the time and it had a certain quirkiness… seriously a band that would never have troubled the charts in, say, 1991. Will give it another listen.
“When the vicar strips he gets away with it” is peak Britpop imagery, I’m saying.

They are worth more than a Britpop label (And I love Britpop).
A proper rock/prog band with top tunes and good musicianship.
They just didn’t seem to get on with each other after the second album.
A true case of “musical differences”!

I think Attack of the Grey Lantern is still a great album. I was never all that fond of Six, it was a bit too proggy for me, but I should probably give it another go. The third album, Little Kix, is far better than its silly name would suggest, and I’d recommend it to anyone who’s liked any of their earlier stuff.

+1 from me that Attack of the Grey Lantern still holds up excellently, though in all honesty I think it was pretty much all downhill from there… Six had it’s moments, but was a frankly unwieldy progathon, and Little Kix was clearly meant to be a 180 degree turn back to short sharp pop songs for the charts, Anton Corbijn band photo and all, but it wasn’t to be…
