You’re quite correct that I have, all irony and meme-promotion aside, come to dearly love the original. Obviously, as masterpieces go, it’s not without its flaws, but I do believe that it’s a truly great riff, and that the drop into the “give me something to break” coda about two minutes in is one of the most idiotically cathartic (hi Fin!) sequences in all of modern music – it’s a real “fuck everything, let’s all just be monkeys for thirty seconds here” moment, and I do love it.
On the other hand, I think it’s really funny that the song is now considered such a standard as to merit this sort of treatment, and it’s hilarious to watch the whole “strummy guitar/saccharine vocal” format being overlaid on top of original source material to which it’s so ludicrously ill-suited. Plus, I really like the slightly weird enunciation throughout.

Oh no, that’s horrible. I genuinely adore the original (as, I suspect, do you), this is the sound of it being murdered.

I’m sort of in two minds.

That is on along the same lines as the ACTUAL greatest cover of all time, Nina Gordon’s Straight Outta Compton:
Nice try Bingo and all that but no cigar.
