What does it sound like?:
This show, recorded last June, sees the eight piece model of Crimson, performing effectively as a double quartet, with the addition of a third drummer and a full time keyboard player. As such, this allows the band to tackle more complex arrangements on stage, a task they undertake with great relish.
Starting with a blistering Larks Tongues Part One, they move quickly into a new arrangement of Neurotica, before embarking on new piece The Errors, making its recorded debut here. More delights follow with another couple of live debuts, The Lizard Suite and Fallen Angel, before superb versions of Islands and Pictures Of A City close out the first disc. A fantastic performance, and we’re still only half way through!
The second half of the show sets off with a rearranged Indiscipline, before moving into a run of concert staples such as Easy Money and The Letters. It’s the final half of this disc that really sets it on fire though – high octane performances of Radical Action and particularly Level Five, followed by a beautiful Starless, and closing with a triumphant 21st Century Schizoid Man. The only weak point for me is the current stage favourite, their version of Heroes, which just doesn’t do it for me.
All told, a fantastic performance, and a great choice to have captured live in this package, which by the way comes with a super 24 page booklet. A must for Crimson fans!
What does it all *mean*?
This band continues to re-imagine and reinvent itself, never standing still – and there’s more to come, as early 2018 will see the release of the Vienna show from this tour too.
